Martin Tessier from
Laval, Québec. Mr. Tessier teaches
mathematics at College de l’ Assomption.
I have been teaching with him for close to twenty years. I have always been intrigued by him and love
the fact that he lives for today. He
does not worry about tomorrow or about the ``what if. ‘’I am amazed by the fact
that he chooses his family over money or material things. When his children were born he often took
time off in order to raise them and help to instill his morals and values in
them. His morals and values are a big part of my intrigue. He often comes to school with bandages on his
arm. Through this project and my
questions I discovered that he donates platelets and plasma every two
weeks. Platelets are used to help cancer
patients during their therapies. Plasma
helps burn victims by stopping hemorrhaging. It is beyond amazing that a man
with a full time teaching job, three children that part -take in many
extra-curricular activities finds time out of his busy schedule every two weeks
to help strangers. Talk about amazing,
talk about paying it forward! I am proud to know him and happy to have chosen
him as my HUMAN.

My grandfather from Paris, France. He is for me one of the strongest and impressive person I’ve ever met. When he was 18 years old he mad the Algerian war (1954-1962). Imagine yourself, leaving your family and everything behind so you can serve your country. Would you have the courage to do such a thing! I wouldn't but he did and it's so impressive even know there is a lot of 18 years old who are getting into the army to serve their country and protect others and I think they deserve a lot of respect. When I asked him why he did such a thing at 18 years old he told me that he wanted to be a part of the history, and it was the perfect opportunity for him.My grandfather was a history teacher and the principal at Lycée de Paris. He lived for history, he loved everything that relates to it. He loved his job, and he still talks about it every time I see him. He told me once “ If I had the choice to go back in time on day, I wouldn't change a thing, and I would do it all over again” He loved his life even if it was hard for him to work and take care of his children because his beloved wife was sick and hospitalized for 5 years with a breathing disease. He woke up every morning, took care of the children and made sure they get everything they needed and wanted. Even if was challenging he successfully achieved his goal to give the best education possible for his children. It impressed me how much he is cultivated and well educated, must of people don't even have half of his knowledge. I wish one day to be like him because when I look at him I see success and a great men with morals who is ready to do anything for the happiness of his family.

MALOUM,Ghizlane.

My grand-pa, François Fassier, was born on May 11th, 1948 in a small city named Ville d'Avray, in France. He was training to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon, and as a part of his training, he did a year of fellowship at the Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montréal in 1980, as a part of the Programme d'Orthopédie Edouard Samson (POES) of the University of Montréal. After 6 months in Québec, he was offered a permanent job at Ste-Justine. François had to go back to France and take the time to think about this offer. As we all know, emigration isn't an easy decision to make, but he was not like most of the migrants we see on TV today... My grand-father had the CHOICE. So after returning back to France, he decided to try the job and the life in Québec. The decision was hard because of administrative burdens, and it took years to finalize all the paper work. After 11 years at Ste Justine, he was recruited by McGill University to become the Chief of Orthopaedics at the Montreal Children's Hospital, and later on Chief of Staff of the Shriners Hospital for Children-Canada. He is a true inspiration to follow your dreams and instincts, and it is why I chose him as my Human.

MATHIEU, Camille, "François Fassier", Orthopaedic surgeon (HONY project), March 8th, 2016.

Maryse Cayouette from Repentigny, Québec.
Maryse Cayouette is a medical microbiologist and infectious diseases specialist that works at Centre Hospitalier Régional de Lanaudière. She’s also the mother of three wonderful children, including myself. I’ve always been amazed by how altruistic she is. Indeed, she always prioritizes her family before anything else. Also, she loves to take time to see her patients at her hospital, because she likes to meet and talk with new people. She also enjoys to work in the laboratory with her team. However, about a year ago, there has been a change in the healthcare system made by two laws proposed by minister Gaetan Barette that made it so my mom didn’t have as much time to see her patients. Also, the «Optilab project» was established. This project suggested to close almost all the little laboratories in hospitals to create a giant one in Laval, so my mom's laboratory unfortunately closed. Maryse didn’t enjoy her job as much as before because she was more stressed and because she couldn't do the two main things that she she enjoyed, so she decided to stop working for a while. However, her desire to continue to help people was so strong that she decided to participate in a humanitarian mission in Benin (Africa). During two weeks, she treated and examined children and adults with health problems, such as malnutrition. When I asked the reason behind her actions, she told me that according to her, it’s not normal that big inequalities between rich and poor still exist on our planet, so when she saw a recruiting poster for the mission in a hospital, she didn’t hesitate one second. She hoped that by doing a good action like this one, she would encourage people around her to do the same and start helping the ones in need to make the world a better place. Isn’t it amazing? I’m really proud to be her son and happy to have chosen her as my HUMAN.

Reference:
DUPUIS, Antoine.

Charles Manno from Laval, Québec. Charles is my grandfather, he was born on July 7th 1945, just at the end of World War II. He was born in Secilia, Italy, and left his country for Québec, Canada, with his family in 1954, at the age of 9 because of poverty. I think he's very interesting because he can show that he's as italian as canadian at the same time. Perhaps, because he was really young when he arrived in Canada, he really learned the culture and made it his own, but he never forgot the past. As he said during the interview, he respects and still practices a lot of italian customs. For example, when we have family parties, like christmas, we can see that there's still the italian custom with the gifts untill you reach 16 years old, but the celebration is more canadian with our turkey! Also, he claims himself like a canadian with italian peculiarities. That shows the mixture of cultures! It is amazing to say that a lot of things from history caused the man he is now. We could talk about the World War II, but, to be more directly on the subject, we see that my grandfather is a perfect example of all the italians that left their home between 1950 and 1970 to immigrate in Québec. More specifically, after World War II, there was a lack of manpower in the canadian growing economy and the Canada had new obligations with the NATO (OTAN), so it reopenned the Canadian border to the Italian immigration. Then, we saw a lot of italians with difficulties joining the Canada and its new culture. If there was not that historical movement, my grandfather would never have been Canadian, maybe he would have been Australian! Whatever, I'm very proud to have a grandfather like him and happy to have chosen him for my project as my HUMAN!

-Olivier Manno

Bibliographie: Sturino, F. (2001). Italo-Canadiens.

I have known this man for 16 years and I never really took the time to ask him things about himself, when I did, I was really impressed so I decided to make my project about him. Marc goneau is a 49 years old man from Saint-Antoine-Abbey, Quebec. He grew up in a middle class family with his two sisters. He was a typical child. He started really developing his personality when he discovered the punk scene, when he was a teen. In the early 80s, the importance of progressive rock was increasing in North America and that's when he discovered bands like Pink Floyd, which he feels changed his life. Since then, he really liked music and says that made him the artist he is today. He is very impressive because he knows how to play a lot of instruments like the guitar, the ukulele, the didgeridoo, the harmonica and he sings. He also dances jive, swing, blues, polka, mazurka and the salsa. He is always willing to learn new things, which can be hard at his age. Although, he finds time to fit in his schedule sports, art, his job and most importantly, to him, his family. He says his happiest moments in life were the births of his three daughters.

1-CHAUMONT, Esther, Interview with Marc Goneau, L’Assomption, March 5th 2016, interview for a school project at the Collège de L’Assomption

Germaine ,
Also names as "mémème" by her close familly, is a wonderful women. She in a familly of seven children, and one of them is her twin. Even if, in her time, the big familly were very encourage, she only have one child. She can look like a totally normal person with nothing special to tell, but you can be surprise. Very young she got separated of her mother , because her mother couldn't take care of her and her twin anymore. So she got to live in a orphanage with many other girls. She grew up there her entire childhood until she could live by her own. She didn't have much education because she lived in a orphanage, but she was still able to find a good joob ! After all that she got married, but her husband was gay, but didn't want the world to find it. So Germaine was many times bad treated by him. After many years with that man, in 1970 divorce got legal so she decide to divorce him, and by doing that she was in the first women in quebec to get a divorce. With that you can realize that very normal looking person can have a really big and interresting story to share.

Dorion, Marika, l'assomption, interview with Germaine côté, school project at collège de l'assomption.

The human that I chose is Émilie Hébert. I know her since I am ten years old, and she always have been one of my greatest friend. This girl is really amazing, and strong physically and mentally. Émilie is inspiring me because she always shows really great perseverance. She is doing ski competition and she started this really demanding sport when she was fourth years old. She is now part of the EDLS (Elite ski team of the Laurentides). Even tho she is in great health, she doesn’t always have been. Émilie had leukaemia when she was younger. In fact, she was diagnosed in June 2009 from this terrible disease. Émilie was only eight years old. Thirty days later, she had already started her remission because all her cancerous cells have been killed and she didn’t have any of them left in her body. She had to do chemotherapy until August 2011. While all those painful treatments, Émilie never gave up. She even continued to do ski competition. With the support of her fantastic, lovely family and her encouraging friends, she won her fight against cancer while always keeping a great attitude, and while being happy. Those aspects are why I have a lot of respect for this beautiful young girl. I’m very proud of her as much as everyone who know her is. Leukaemia is an important disease that comes with a lot of pain and she fight it with bravery. In fact, leukaemia is a group of cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal white blood cells. These white blood cells are not fully developed and are called blasts or leukaemia cells. Symptoms may include bleeding and bruising problems, feeling tired, fever, and an increased risk of infections. The cause is at this day unknown. In children under fifteen , the five-year survival rate is between 60% and 85%, depending on the type of leukaemia. In 2012, 352,000 people globally developed leukaemia and it caused 265,000 deaths. It is the most common type of cancer in children, with three quarters of leukaemia cases in children. Now, Émilie continue to grow as a really strong and incredible person.

Humans around us project

Maruska Giachetto is a young 25 years old women born in switzerland. She is currently working for the environnement departement in Nepal. I’ve known her for sixteen years because she is my sister. What I found amazing about her is the fact that she follow her dreams. Once she decides to do something, there is nothing that can stop her. Because of this, she has been able to travel on her own into multiple countries such as Australia, China, Bahamas, îles turquoises, Turkey, Hawaï, Nepal and more. As soon as she finished the highschool, she left home to go in appartement. Then, she trade the normal Quebec province for the amazing mountains of British Columbia. She did her studies at the UBC after working into a Clubmed located in the bahamas. All this passion for travel and adventure come from our mother. My mom was born with the hippie mouvement in the 1960’s. When she was young, she realy got inspired by this mouvement who was encouraging people to free themselfs and to travel around the world. Finaly she decided to work on a crusing ship. This allowed her to visit a incredible number of countries in the world. I think that all the stories that she told us and all the amazing anecdote she experience inspired my sister. For me, following dreams is something very amazing and thats why I chose my sister for this project !

William
Beausé-jour HUMAN OF NEW YORK

FRANÇOIS RICARD

The person I chose for my Human of New York project is my father in law, François Ricard. I chose him because of the help he brought to the poeple of Haiti before and after the big earthquake that happened in 2010. He worked has a police officer and even a lieutenant for the city of Montreal for a big part of his life, and after that he worked for the ONU in Haiti to go teach to the people of Haiti how to become good police officer. He got “lucky” during the earthquake because he left a week before to have an operation, but a lot of his compatriot got injured or even kill in this disaster. But he didn’t got scared by this event and went back weeks later. But also what impress me a lot is that he lived a lot of difficult things in Haiti, things that I could not imagine, but I know that he doesn’t regret his past in Haiti because he knows that he helped a lot and a lot of people, that’s why he’s the human that I choose to talk about, because in life we need to help people, to help humanity to evolve, an he did it in a big way.
BEAUSÉJOUR.William.

Reine Roy from Repentigny, Quebec. Reine Roy is my grandma, but she’s not an ordinary grandmother; she’s the best one in the world. She’s the most generous and kindest person I know. She loves her family so much and she enjoys life. Reine teached all her life the cooking and sewing class at JBM. When her 50-year anniversary arrived, she decided to stop teaching and dedicate her time to sick people. Indeed, she was volunteering at the Sacré-Coeur hospital, at the time of the baby boomer. All the hospitals were full and they needed more staff. She liked it, because she was always in contact with people. When I asked her why she’s been so much generous all her life, she told me that money isn’t her priority. She prefers share it with the people in need and people that she loves. That’s what I like about my grandma. Also, she try to enjoy the little and important moments that will stay in her mind forever. Reine is a person that is travelling a lot all around the world, because she likes to discover new things, cultures and places. She may seen a bit adventuress. However, she is one of the most « girly » or « princess » woman that I’ve ever know. She likes to arrange herself to always be beautiful. That’s another thing that I like about her : she can be a real and tough woman, but also a girly one. I am so proud that she’s my grandmother and happy to say that she is my HUMAN.
