ISP Seminar 9 Wall: On Capital by Marika Sosnowski

Once you've watched the lecture by Yanis Varoufakis that I posted on the LMS (and have reposted in the first tile below), I'd like you to do the following:

1. Add a block titled 'QUOTE' with your favourite quote from one of the two readings from this week. What is one of the things that really struck you as interesting or important or surprising? And then add a little explanation of why you chose that quote and why you think it is so insightful or important.

2. Add a second block called 'QUESTION' and write down one big question that you've got after doing this week's readings and/or listening to the lecture above. If you've got more than one question, feel free to post a few!

3. Try to post an answer to at least one other student's QUESTION in the comments section under their question. If you're one of the first people to post, log back in tomorrow and see what questions have been posted that you might help answer.

I like this quote as it is so powerful and strong. Bernie Sanders does not hold back with his words. I also think that in many fields and industries people tend to cross boundaries and as a result they must be held accountable, therefore, for Sanders to publicly speak up about the injustice facing a large proportion of the people of the United states is really inspiring and remarkable.

If more than half of the worlds economic output is from informal work (Global Politics: a new introduction), how do these individuals become recognised as contributors to the global economy? Under the capitalist theory, that most major economies fall under, capitalism assumes the autonomy of the individual, granting dignity to the poor. By affirming people's right to their own labour, regardless of their position on the economic ladder, capitalism, theoretically, offers the poor the means to improve their own well-being. However, do individuals, due to the informal nature of their work, reap the benefits of capitalism? Meaning, do they have the ability to grow their own capital or have economic freedom if the nature of their work does not fit within the boundaries?
