In 55 and 54 B.C. Julius Caesar made two expeditions to Britain, but was unable to conquer the island. It was only in 43 A.D., under the Emperor Claudius, that the actual Roman conquest of Britian took place.

The Romans never conquered Scotland, but the rest of island remained a Roman province until 410 A.D. . The Roman brought a high level of civilization and built roads and towns but they never mixed with the local population. The parts of Britain which were really civilized by the Romans were the South and East. London was a commercial centre. The economic basic of Britain was agriculture. The roads planned for the whole Britain, were very good, running in straight lines from one centre to another. The official Roman cults were practised, but the Romans also tolerated the Celtic gods, and gods of other foreign countries. Christianity too, was introduced into Britain. The population was not trained in arms, and when the Roman soldiers were recalled to Italy in 410 A.D., Britain became an eassy prey to the invaders from the North-East.

VIKINGS OR DANES (9th century)
Early in the 9th century new raiders from modern Denmark, Norway and Sweden, the Vikings, or Danes began to attack the coasts of Britain and established settlements in northern and eastern England. They were threatening to conquer the whole of England but were defeated and driven back by King Alfred the Great ,the greatest of all Anglo-Saxon rulers.

THE NORMAN (1066)
In 1066 Duke William of Normandy defeated Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king, at the battle of Hastings. Harold died in the battle and William, later know as William the Conqueror, was crowned in London on Christmas Day. The Norman Conquest was the last invasion of the island and fundamental turning point in British history. William introduces feudalism into England. The Normans had French customs and spoke a variety of Old French called Norman French, so England came under the influence of France. The Normans built great stone castles from where the new lords could control the surrounding country. It was from the merging of old Celtic and Anglo-Saxon elements with new French elements that English civilisation was to develop over the coming centuries.
