the setting is very depressing because the yellow fever is going around. this is effects Matilda because it is making her mom sick. the setting also effects the conflict because 30 years ago in the town the yellow fever was going around and now it is coming back, so the conflict would not be the yellow fever if this wasn't the setting. now in the book the setting affects some more of the conflicts. for example grandfather died because of the robbers and the setting has turned into a town with lots of poor unhappy people who only can get things from stealing other peoples things.

30 years before the story took place, there was a yellow fever in Philadelphia. Now, a fever is spreading again and people are fleeing to the countryside or anywhere away from the city. The yellow fever in the past may have been very bad and the people who witnessed that are probably impacted by that severely. So as soon as the fever started to become more serious, memories came back to haunt the citizens of Philadelphia and they escaped it as soon as possible.

Now that there is the fever farmers from the country are afraid to come into the city because they think that they are going to get sick. Some sick people are being thrown out of their own houses so their family won't get sick. The fever has gotten so bad, that people are abandoning their own family members. Also, kids were getting stranded and alone since their parents died from fever. Many orphanages had become too full to handle many children.

Matilda is developing very interestingly as a character, and I fear she will leave untrusting all adults. Every one has led her away, died, or steered her down the wrong path and I do not think Eliza alone can change that. It just goes to show that children were over looked and considered stupid in compared to adults back then more than now. And I think Nell shows how Matilda wants to be around younger people, or to be in charge.

Now, everyone across the country is super cautious of the fever. When people were trying to go to the countryside to flee the chaos of the fever, the roadside security guards wouldn't let anyone who seemed a little sick in. For example, when the farmer was riding with Matilda and Grandfather to the country, the roadside security guards stopped them to make sure nobody had the fever. When Grandfather started coughing (which isn't even a fever symptom), the farmer lied about Matilda and Grandfather, leaving them behind and carrying on with his own life. Later, Matilda and Grandfather were left to survive on their own in the woods.

At this time George Washington was the president of America and many people in Philadelphia trusted him to get them out of the fever.
