https://youtu.be/D6i5CtPoGh0

This video shows the use of two assistive technologies, CoWriter and the LiveScribe pen, a.k.a. Smart Pen. CoWriter is a software that can be uploaded to any computer and the LiveScribe pen is an audio recording tool. Both of these ATs would be highly beneficial to Myisha and Brad who together struggle with reading comprehension, written expression, and handwriting. These tools are great because they do not disturb others in the classroom while they are in use, nor do they draw attention to the students, helping Myisha and Brad feel comfortable within their inclusive settings.

Brad could utilize the tools in the program to help with his distractibility, and since he is hands-on learner who benefits from visual supports, this program would be perfect. Read & Write Gold offers strategies to be successful in their classes. According to Dr. Luke in The Power of Strategy Instruction using strategies “supplies students with the same tools and techniques that efficient learners use to understand and learn new material or skills.” Using Read & Write Gold could be a strategy for each student to use on a daily basis to help them be successful in inclusion and/or general education courses without distracting from class or calling attention to themselves

Clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoHsGE2PwCs

Brief description of clip:
The clip covers five different tools that can be utilized as assistive technology in the classroom. Some of those tools include Kurzweil 3000, Dragon Dictation, Scanmarker, and LiveScribe smart pen.

https://youtu.be/L194bVXuC6I
(This link isolates the Kurzweil 3000)

Brief description of resource:
The device that I chose is the Kurzweil 3000. The Kurzweil 3000 is utilized as a book and for testing materials but it can also edit and highlight, create vocabulary list, audio files, read the text to student, and voice to text.

Which student will it benefit?
Our text tells us that Brad has an Autism and ADHD diagnosis. He needs help in the areas of organization, study skills, attention span, reading comprehension and engaging with peers. He is a learns more efficiently with visual supports and is hands on.

Myisha has a specific learning disability in reading fluency, reading comprehension, written expression and oral language processing. She is below grade level in fluency, oral reading comprehension and written expression. Myisha needs prompts to stay on task and review notes.

Benefits to Brad:
1. Organization: The app will keep his text, notes and study materials in one place.

2. Study Skills: The app will allow him to highlight important ideas, add sticky notes, add audio clips of his additional pieces he wants to add or he can record something the teacher said during lecture.
It can also create a list of key terms to study.

3. Reading Comprehension:
The app has the ability to read the material to the student. You can highlight any word or phrase and will provide a definition and will add it to a vocabulary list to review.

Benefits to Myisha:
1. Oral/Language processing:
The app would allow Myisha to slow the speed that the text reads or to repeat it. Add auditory notes as a reminder later. The instructor could also record important pieces of lecture. The app has visual strategies including highlighting and electronic sticky notes.

2. Staying on task:
The app would allow Myisha to interact with the text or material more than just lecture or reading a text. It is an app that can be placed on a laptop for her and she could take home to review notes in the evening.

It would allow both Brad and Myisha the ability to work at their own pace and review the
information as needed in the specific learning style they need (auditory, visual, hands on, etc.)

Rationale for selecting resource:
This tool provides a variety of supports that can be utilized in the classroom and at home.
1. Provides auditory supports
2. Provides visual supports
3. Interactive
4. Supports reading comprehension
5. Supports talk to text
6. Increases study skills
7. Access to dictionary by scanning word or phrase
8. Reads the text to the student

One ability that this tool is lacking is a translator for ESL students. There are other services in the clip that offer this ability.

Readworks is a K-12 reading comprehension program that has been around for a long time. They now have a digital platform to offer the same services that have been expanded to include all of the benefits that technology can provide. This clip is a fairly short tutorial on using the setting up and using the program in your class.

Readworks digital is a great way to assign independent reading comprehension activities to the entire class, but each student is assigned reading based on reading lexile. The entire class can read articles on a common topic, but they are individually assigned based on lexile or target skill. You can also choose articles that have a audio feature for students who need the story to be read aloud, or you may use StepReads, which is a less complex version of the original article so all students can read the same content. Students can work at their own pace and written responses are graded by the teacher, who can grade with their own criteria based on the students' needs. The program can be used on computers, tablets/iPads, and chromebooks, so it should work well with any of the available technology in your district. Since it is a web-platform, Chrome extensions and apps should be able to work concurrently with it. Additionally, the articles can be easily reassigned if necessary. With a huge selection of articles and stories available on a number of subjects/topics, there are many different ways these can used in both the general and special education settings.

Both Myisha and Brad would benefit from having articles assigned based on reading lexile, as well as being allowed to work on their own pace. Brad would especially benefit from the audio to have the text read aloud to him. Both would benefit from the StepRead option for more inclusive class assignments. Myisha would benefit from the articles that are assigned based on target skills, while Brad would benefit from articles assigned based on his interests to increase engagement. Both would benefit from the individualized grading portions of the comprehension questions, the digital platform, and the opportunity to re-do the assignment if necessary.

I chose this resource because of the ease of use, the ability to use it in both special education and general education settings, the ability to use it district-wide, and the ability to address many different levels, subjects, and target skills. At my high school we use this program in some capacity in every special education classroom, including my self-contained classroom. It is extremely useful and fits well into my district's technology initiative. And the best part? It's free! Absolutely no expense to the teacher/school and it is paperless.

It helps students with reading difficulties by allowing the text to be read to them, highlights the text, and can upload textbooks. It is easy and convenient and incorporates technology that all students use. It can be used on the computer, phone, ipad, tablets, etc. It also helps students that may have visual impairments.

This app would benefit both Brad and Myisha by providing additional support for reading. It is also age appropriate and would help them in a general education setting because they would not stand out at all. Since Myisha struggles with anxiety, this app would allow her to read the same book and access the same materials without feeling anxious about being different from other students. Since Brad benefits from visual supports, this app would allow him more visual inputs for his reading assignments in all classes. It may also aide in his ability to focus and maintain organization by having all of his materials in one place or on one device.

The reason I chose this strategy or AT device above all the others I looked at was because I felt it was the most age appropriate. I also felt that it would be most beneficial to Brad and Myisha in all of their classes rather than just some.
