Ahead are some artifacts taken from my first two weeks. To be honest, I feel like Allie and I are doing so well in every class. Between elementary school, middle school band, and high school orchestra, theory, AP theory, and pull out lessons, I think that we're doing well in all classes. We also created a general assessment key that will be workshopped in the future

Elementary- I've never been more exhausted then those first 3 days of teaching elementary, but the second week was much less intensive. We're finding that the more we use songs that the students enjoy and know, the better our lessons go. As well as this, although classes are chatty, we will not resort to classic "classroom management" standards like taking away opportunities or verbally attacking students. Instead we brainstorm how we can get more done and respect all people in the classroom community.

Middle School- As I'm new to band in all facets, I've spent the first two weeks getting familiar with the instruments, primarily trombone and flute. During the second week, Kim allowed me to work with the flute and trombone lessons on their scales and solos. I was able to diagnose technical problems to have better tone and other such technical issues. There's only one class that is acutal band, as the rest are mixed pull out lessons. I plan to try an improvisation lesson, where students will improv at the same time to stem any nerves of improving in front of everybody.

High School- These students are all so smart and full of amazing ideas. We've begun a soundtrack project with theory, and students are already connecting so many musical metaphors. With AP Theory, the students are playing compositional telephone and composing music from a chosen springboard. We've developed large rapor with all students here, and are able to collaborate well with all of them on their projects. The orchestra has all parts of their arrangement of the piece solid, and we've put them in groups to decide how the arrangement will sound, the order of parts, who plays what, and many other musical decisions. We facilitate the groups and help to develop justifications and ideas for their decisions.

This week, we continued the unit but changed a bunch of instructional practices. At Northeast elementary, there seemed to be a lack of engagmenet due to a large population of ESL learners as well as learners who speak only Spanish. After researching ESL practices, I put translations and images with the English as well as teaching around 50% in Spanish. Along with that, I learned a lot about questioning- I tend to ask questions I don't want answers to such as "Who's excited to learn today?"

We also found the online tool called Google Jamboard, which is a functional whiteboard for all classes that saves, which is great for mindmaps and us since we move classroom in Oak Park

There is one class where many of the students tend to disrespect each other and the teachers in the room. We plan on trying to introduce a Kohn style of classroom where students will help create class agreements and respect each other.

This week we worked on getting ready to get towards the end of the project. However, after checking in with the students, many are still stuck on the idea of only making metaphors of the lyrics. We were able to go up to each student and affirm that they have to use the actual music for the metaphors, so it seems it may take more time to get presentations going than expected. We also decided that for their presentation, each student should have an artifact that shows their understanding of the metaphor to show- this can be a drawing, chart, graph, etc.

This week, we finished up our unit! The students learned the melody to their song as well as how to accompany themselves while singing it. We were able to record it and send it to their families as a Valentine's Day present from the students since they wrote it.

The kids loved this, but we found that many of the students families are only able to speak and understand spanish. Because of this, we had the students translate their own songs into Spanish and try to sing them. Although some of the songs didn't translate into something singable, the students seemed so empowered and happy to bring home something their families would understand.

On Tuesday, I had a really hard time with the last 3 classes. There were students in every class who refused to sing in Spanish or try to help. When we asked why, they wouldn't answer. We talked with these classes about why we do this and how Spanish is important to a large portion of the community. We also had many problems with students listening to both us and their peers when instructions are given or answers spoken. We had to have a lot of talks needed to be had about respecting ourselves, our peers, and our classmates. I think the week after break is when we'll start Kohn with a lot of these classes.

We told them that their presentations will be due the week after break, where they'll have 2-3 minutes to present one of their songs, their metaphors, and some sort of artifact. The artifact can be any representation of their thinking and metaphor. Me and Allie gave example presentations on Friday, and the students said that us being vulnerable humans to them was very special and helped them a ton. We also told them their assessment forms will be due the Friday the week after. They're making great headway, and I'm already so proud of them

When Allie, Kevin, and I were brainstorming ideas for our next AP project, I found an idea we could modify from a 9-12 full HS curriculum I designed for a class. The students originally explored the functions of music in the digital world, but we thought to use Merriam's functions of music and have students look in their own lives for the functions. They then will have to make some sort of graphic to represent the prominence of each function such as a pie chart, and then explain how each example of music serves the function it's labeled as using the musical dimensions and elements.

I was allowed to do more with the middle schoolers and improvisation which is coming along nicely. Over the break, Orchestra began playing their arrangement, theory is presenting their projects, and AP are on their 3rd pass!

This week we started a new unit- Music in our stories. We use the question "How does music help tell stories?" to frame and guide our learning. We started with students listening to a reading of the book "Giraffe's Can't Dance" without music and then with music, noticing how the playlist of music helped to tell the story. After, they connected the music and story with movement, doing dances inspired by the type of music and animals in the story. We then moved to learning Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da by The Beatles. We listened once to pick out the characters and their relation to each other and learning the words.

Notice the jamboards filled with student ideas here!

The students at Northeast really struggled with behavior today, which I think may have come from a lack of ESL stuff, which should be gone

This time, I found what I imagined to be more relevant examples of musician's improvising such as a Guitar Solo and a rapper freestyling. I think the students were just being shy but nobody raised their hand when I had asked if anybody knew rap music.

The teacher is wonderful but I think the class is so structured and impersonal that the students don't want to connect to the instructors. I was told that I had to cut my improv lesson next week to try conducting the band piece.
As well as this, the freestyle had the word "herpes" in it, which I didn't deem innapropriete as they're learning about their bodies and STD's in their health class. However, after class I was told this was way too inapropriete as if the rapper had said a swear word.

Because of this, we had whoever was ready to present Friday present as models! Most of the presentations were pretty good, but many had artifacts that didn't relate to the musical metaphor.

So far, if I had to change one thing about how this project was done, I would've structured it with a Thinksheet beforehand to structure their thoughts and main ideas. It seems the students are struggling so this extra scaffold would have helped immensely.

This week was quite exciting in that elementary was beginning composing and the HS students are finishing their first projects. We lost a day on Friday as it was a conference day, so some of the HS things were pushed to next week.

The Elementary classes were generally improved in getting through things which was good, but I struggled in the Choir. I had a memory slip and taught something wrong, which took all of class to re-learn. This was really disheartening to be honest

We watched two different scenes with music in the background and had students talk about musical metaphors they observed. After connecting these to elements, we put on a score with no film and had them talk about what they heard and what it might connect to!

Instead of the usual approach of just running, listening, and error correcting, I approached the time from a student centered approach. We analyzed what the piece was about and made our musical decisions accordingly . I also brought up students to listen for errors and balance and had them give input on how to make it better!
