The Fountains Of Silence by Ruta Sepetys is a book set in Post Spanish Civil War, with Generalissimo Francisco Franco in power. This book switches between the points of view of Ana, Daniel, Rafa, Julia, and Puri. Ana, Rafa, and Julia are all siblings. Julia is the oldest, Rafa is the middle, and Ana is the youngest.
During the war, their father was killed and their mother was imprisoned. After the war, Julia takes a sewing job, Rafa has taken two jobs, and Ana works at the Castellana Hilton, a new hotel for tourists.
There Ana meets Daniel, a teenage aspiring photographer from Texas who is the son of a big oil tycoon. Daniel falls in love with Ana. "Well, I'll ask you the question-do you like Ana?' Daniel leans in closer to Puri, 'A lot', he whispers. 'Maybe that can be our secret?'"(Pg. 334) This shows that he wants to be with her but it's not possible because employees cannot be seen with guests.
Julia is the oldest and the most scarred of them all. "There is a category of unspeakable things, a dark drawer where inexpressible truths live in exile. Julia knows them well. Don't speak. Don't tell."(Pg. 170) This shows how much she went through during the war. She is married to a man named Antonio and they had a baby girl named Lali. She has five mouths to feed and very little money.
Rafa was sent to the boy's home after the war where he lived the life of a slave. He escaped with a boy named Fuga. Since then, he's been looking up to him and trying to help him reach his dreams. But Rafa has a secret to hide.
Puri is Rafa, Julia, and Ana's cousin. She works at the Inclusa, an orphanage where lonely kids go. There, the kids get adopted by families who are willing to take them in. At this time, orphans are not uncommon. The nuns that work there, though are very suspicious.
So many different things happen that you need to read the book to find out about, but the theme emerges at the end. The theme I got from the book is that the truth will set you free. - AV

This media is an oil painting of a favored beach in Spain called the Caleta, Málaga. Sorolla loved showing off Spain's hidden gems and beauty through his soft and colorful art style. This painting was created in the year 1910. This painting is connected through the book, Fountains of Silence, by Ruta Sepetys because it strengthened relationships between characters and gave hope to those who kept fighting. One way this helped relationships is between Daniel and Ana. Ana thought of Sorolla's paintings as an escape from the struggles of poverty and confinement she wanted to escape. She opened up about finding hope through this painting to Daniel which bonded these two characters together immensely and helped propel the storyline and their relationship.- AL

Accuracy of Book Scenes

The book Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys is greatly accurate historically. An example of this is a scene on page 42 when Ben is explaining to Daniel how Spain's economy works with this dictatorship. He explains to Daniel, "It was brutal after the civil war. But things are looking up now, Spain allowed the Americans to build military bases here". In the book, this was taking place in the year 1957. According to Britannica "In 1953 an agreement with the United States gave Franco considerable financial aid in return for the establishment of four U.S. military bases in Spain". This detail that Ruta added to the book is technically not historically inaccurate but the details are correct. Fountains of Silence also explains in multiple points of the novel the deal the United States has created with Franco. This deal also includes supplements of oil to be provided which is correct according to Britannica.com. The book scenes are accurate with factual information but are not placed at the right time of the event. - AL

After the Spanish Civil War, Franco became the new head of government by using the emergency powers given to him in 1936. The national economy under his rule fell back significantly as he aimed for self-sufficiency which led to him cutting Spain off from the international market. The people living in Spain at this time faced much financial hardship as the wages dropped and almost famine-like years in the 1940s. The quality of living also decreased as people began moving to "shantytowns" within cities. In addition to Franco's dictatorship, controlling and censoring the media prevented any organized protest against his unjust policies. As a way to punish the Republicans (the opposite side of the war), there were campaigns to steal their children and put them in orphanages to indoctrinate Franco's regime's beliefs in them. This happened to over 12,000 children and they were sent to orphanages or adopted by people who supported Franco's dictatorship. Even after the war ended, the atrocities of the war on Republicans continued on, as 50,000 people were executed by Franco's party (the Nationalists). In addition to this, many former Republicans faced different forms of discrimination and violence. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum describes such atrocities and states, "By 1940, more than 500,000 individuals were rounded up and sent to about 60 concentration camps. Large numbers of prisoners were conscripted for forced labor or to fight in Franco's army or tried by military courts (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum)." This shows the absolute discrimination that Republicans faced even after the war and the price they were deemed to pay. Another form of discrimination was the public humiliation of Republican prisoners and women. Overall, the reign of Franco brought much despair to Spain and its people, economically and politically. His government caused the indoctrination of the future generation and the torture of the former generation that opposed him. - AR

Cress is a dystopian novel that is part of the Lunar Chronicles. Cress is about a young girl that is trapped in a pod up in space, isolated from her kind on the Moon. She is very intelligent, but is manipulated by the Queen of the Moon to do work she does not agree with. Though Cress and Fountains of Silence may be set in different time periods and be from different genres, at their core they are quite similar. Both characters have internal struggles with whether what they are doing is right, though they are on various matters with varying matters of importance. In addition, both Cress and Ana are confined by different shackles and yearn for unattainable freedom that they will get later on. They also are heavily influenced by the media around them, as seeing other areas and lives makes them yearn for freedom even more. Though they might be similar in many ways, they also differ. One example is the fact that their situations are very different and the importance of their dilemmas vary. The main character, Cress, is internally conflicted about whether she should give important information about the whereabouts of people opposing the Queen. However, Ana has an internal conflict about whether she should pursue a real relationship with Daniel. In addition, Ana's confinement is much less literal than Cress's, as she is actually physically sealed off from the world in her pod. Finally, Ana's love interest, Daniel, is physically there in her life, while Cress's love interest is only shown through a screen. Therefore, while their dilemmas may be similar, their actual circumstances are quite different. - AR

This is a picture of Generalissimo Francisco Franco talking to his men. I chose this photo because The Fountains of Silence is set during his dictatorship and after. He may be working through a plan with his men to change Spain. I chose this photo because this conversation could have changed everything in the story or it's what made the story what it is.-AV
