General Information about River Tripotamos

--> The river that flows through Veria, known today as Tripotamos, is formed by the confluence of three streams (Mavroneri, Tourmanis, Asproneri) approximately 500 meters northeast of the village of the same name. Its name, derived from this natural phenomenon, has been consistently found on maps and in books since 1930. The total length of the river, from its sources (Asproneri, Mavroneri) to its mouth is approximately 25 kilometers.

Historical Significance

--> Tripotamos has played a significant role in the history of the region. During the Byzantine era, the river served as a natural defensive boundary for the city of Veria. In the Ottoman period, it was crucial for providing water to irrigate the fertile plains surrounding the city. One of the most notable events in the river’s history occurred in 1935, when severe flooding caused extensive damage to crops and settlements. Another devastating flood happened in 1978, highlighting the need for improved water management infrastructure.

Uses and Environmental Importance

--> Today, Tripotamos remains vital for irrigation, supplying water to Veria, Alexandria, and the agricultural lands of Tripotamos, Rachia, and Asomata. However, significant water extraction, particularly during the summer months, reduces its flow. During periods of heavy rainfall, the river’s water level rises dangerously, often resulting in floods due to the substantial altitude difference between its sources (390 meters) and its mouth (20 meters).

Sources

Discover Veroia, Veriotis, Wikipedia (the information)

Discover Veroia (the image)

Kyriotissa, with its labyrinthine narrow cobblestone streets and dead ends, tall buildings, mansions, and courtyards surrounded by high walls, evokes the traditional houses of the Balkans from the 18th and 19th centuries. Behind the tall courtyard walls and beside the alleys, small stone-built churches emerge. The neighborhood is home to numerous Christian and Byzantine churches.

Kyriotissa follows the architectural style of Barbouta, with sachnisiá (protruding upper floors), prominent overhanging stories, multiple windows and skylights, timber-framed walls, and heavy doors. Many of the preserved houses have been restored and transformed into recreational and entertainment venues. The area still boasts a significant number of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches.

Among the buildings, the Sarafoglou Mansion stands out as one of the oldest in Veria, built in the mid-18th century. Another impressive structure is the Vlachogiannis Mansion, noted for its strongly fortified appearance and wooden projections.

Before reaching Mitropoleos Street and the imposing City Hall building, near Kyriotissa lies the Byzantine Museum, a 20th-century industrial building converted into a museum that showcases the region's history during the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods.

The collection includes remarkable portable icons, frescoes from local churches and buildings, mosaic floors, architectural sculptures, marble inscriptions, pottery and small-scale artifacts, as well as coins, manuscripts, and funerary findings.

The old central market of Veria and the "Tenkezidika" area are important commercial and historical pillars of the city. The market, which stretches from Odos M. Alexandrou to Odos Kentrikis, combines commercial activity and daily life, with traditional shops and handicraft workshops. The preservation of these workshops is critical to the continuation of Veria's local identity.

The Closed Covered Municipal Market, built in 1956, is an important architectural monument. It was designed to offer organized trade and protection from the weather, but failed to attract the expected commercial traffic. This market is part of the largest commercial area of the city and is connected to the Tin Shops, preserving the local tradition and connecting the past with the present.

Elia Square was and remains one of the most beautiful spots in the city. Βut over the years the square has changed. Its concrete fountain in the center, its cafe always busy, and a lot of cars moving around the perimeter. The rebuilding of the city obliterated old neoclassical buildings, with some, fortunately, still standing to remind us of the past. Some olive trees, were transplanted recently, giving it beauty and justifying its old name. Furthermore the meadow with the blossoming peach trees is distinct, making the city beautiful. The old image of the square was more human and more familiar to everyone, as it had the concept of a park and its benches gave everyone, young and old, the opportunity to sit, rest or chat, with less concrete around them and more green. The appearance of the square may have changed but it has always been a popular place. A place where young people meet, older people go for coffee and take walks and tourists enjoy the view of the city. Thus it has remained an important part of our city

The Jewish Quarter of Veria, or Barbouta, is located next to the Tripotamos River on the west side of the city. It is said, in fact, that the Jews inhabited this area, as early as the time of the Apostle Paul. The area is built with a purely defensive urban structure and is isolated and enclosed. The steep slope of the land on the river side creates a natural fortification for the district, while on the other sides the external facades of the building system complete this sense of isolation. The houses of the district are built next to each other, creating a closed triangle with the only openings being the gallery under the houses of Merarchias Street, which leads to the Jewish Synagogue and with the second opening to be located antidiametrically opposite the first.Until today, fifty old houses of Macedonian architecture are preserved and some of them still have the Jewish inscriptions. The houses and the synagogue of the neighborhood were restored in 1977, through a special program of the Municipality of Veria, with the help of Jewish organizations.

https://kokkinospiti.gr/veroia/evraiki-sinoikia/

Originally, it was a modest building reflecting the simplicity of the early 20th century. At one point in its history, the building also served as a school, playing an important role in the education of local children. As Veria grew, the need for a modern administrative center became evident. In the mid-20th century, the building was expanded and renovated to meet the city's evolving needs. Today, it is a modern administrative complex, blending functionality with aesthetics, symbolizing the city's progress and respect for its historical roots.

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ the Savior or the Church of Christ is a medieval Orthodox church in the southern part of Veria, Greece. The church is a chapel of the parish of Saint John the Merciful. According to the founding inscription, the church was built with the sponsorship of Xenos Psalidas in 1314/15, after the death of his wife Euphrosyne. The church was given to the monk Ignatius Kalothetos by a golden bull of Emperor Andronikos II to become a monastery catholicon. The church is single-nave and has a wooden roof, with a hexagonal niche in the apse of the sanctuary. It has three entrances, one on each side. In the early 18th century, a closed peristyle was added to three of the sides of the church, but this was demolished in the 1950s and replaced by an arched peristyle on the north and west sides. The interior of the church is frescoed. According to the founding inscription, the frescoes are the work of Georgios Kalliergis and were made in 1314/15. The frescoes are characterized by the variety of colors and precise design and are part of the Palaeologan revival. The frescoes on the side walls are organized into three zones, with full-length saints in the lower one, busts of evangelists, saints and prophets in the middle one and scenes from the twelvefold procession in the upper one, from which Pentecost is absent. The Assumption of the Virgin Mary adorns the upper zone of the western wall. In the apse's quadrant, the Virgin Mary is depicted holding Jesus in her arms, flanked by angels, and below, the concelebrating patriarchs. Inside, on the north and south walls, there are also two apses, inside which are painted the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus.

However, in 1941, most of the Jews from the city were deported and exterminated in concentration camps. The wall, placed in 2006, is located in the area that was once the Jewish ghetto and serves as a memorial to preserve memory and combat forgetfulness.

The Archaeological Museum of Veria was established in 1962 and is housed in a historic building, which has been renovated and expanded over the years.
