The teachers' union is one of the most powerful lobbies in American politics, via the NEA and the AFT, two of the largest unions in the country, representing millions of educators. Traditionally, unions have supported policies regarding education funding, teacher salaries, and working conditions. Their apparent displays of strength include political endorsements, huge amounts of campaign contributions, and grassroots mobilization.

Perhaps one of the most significant policies the teachers' unions affected was the Every Student Succeeds Act, ESSA, in 2015, which substituted the No Child Left Behind Act. They lobbied for provisions to be inserted within it that would lessen the emphasis on standardized testing, shifting much of the power over measures used in holding schools accountable back to states. It is emblematic of the union's stance concerning a reduction in federal mandates for education.
