Have you ever thought about where your plastic waste goes after you throw it away? Unfortunately, a lot of plastic rubbish ends up in our oceans. Each year, about 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our seas and oceans—that's like dumping a rubbish truck full of plastic into the ocean every minute!

How Plastic Harms Marine Life

Marine animals often mistake plastic for food. Sea turtles think plastic bags are jellyfish, seabirds mistake plastic bits for fish, and even tiny plankton can eat microplastics—pieces of plastic smaller than a grain of rice. When animals eat plastic, it can:

Block their digestive systems

Make them feel full when they're actually starving

Cause injuries to their bodies

Release harmful chemicals into their bodies

Tangled Up

Many marine animals get tangled up in plastic waste like fishing nets, six-pack rings, and plastic bags. Seals, dolphins, whales, and seabirds can become trapped, making it hard for them to swim, fly, or find food. Some animals even drown because they can't reach the surface to breathe.

Damage to Habitats

Plastic doesn't just harm individual animals—it damages entire ecosystems. Coral reefs can be smothered by plastic bags or cut by sharp plastic edges. Beaches become littered with rubbish, affecting nesting sea turtles and seabirds. Even the deep ocean floor is now covered with plastic waste in many places.

The Plastic Problem in New Zealand

New Zealand's beautiful coastlines and marine environments are also affected by plastic pollution. Seabirds like the albatross and endangered marine mammals like Hector's dolphins face threats from plastic waste. Beach clean-ups around Auckland and other coastal areas collect thousands of pieces of plastic each year.

What Can We Do?

The good news is that we can all help reduce plastic pollution:

Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers instead of single-use plastic

Properly recycle the plastic you do use

Pick up litter when you see it, especially at beaches

Participate in beach clean-up events

Ask your parents to choose products with less plastic packaging

The Future of Our Oceans

Scientists are working on solutions too. Some are developing biodegradable plastics made from plants that break down naturally. Others are creating machines to collect plastic from the ocean. But the best solution is to use less plastic in the first place.

Remember, every piece of plastic you keep out of the ocean helps protect marine life. By making small changes, we can make a big difference for our ocean friends!
