1. I admire my mom and dad the most because of everything they’ve done for me. They are heroes because no matter what, I know that they will always stand by my side. My parents take care of me through thick and thin, and they are incredibly patient and admirable in my eyes. I love them so much and I strive to be like them in my everyday life. I try to do everything I can to make them proud, even if it is a bit stressful. They are undoubtably my biggest role models.

2. There are a few qualities that I admire in other people. Determinination is one, because when someone puts their mind to something, they can no anything. Another is patience. Being patient towards strangers and loved ones alike is admirable to a strong degree. I enjoy being in the presence of someone humorous, because jokes and laughter always help to make me feel better. It is important in my eyes that someone is compassionate and loving to everyone. Finally, it is important for people to be open minded towards new ideas. It is completely fine to have strong opinions about certain subjects, but it is even better to be able to listen to other ideas and beliefs without immediately shooting them down.

Sonny from Homer H. Hickam, Jr.’s memoir, Rocket Boys, uses his family as a way to fuel his passion for creating rockets. As he becomes more and more interested in rockets, his family poses a bit of a threat, especially his father, Homer H. Hickam, Sr. While out testing rocket fuels with Quentin, one of the explodes and sends shrapnel flying, causing Sonny’s father to come out and scold them. He berates Sonny for pursuing his passion before Elise, Sonny’s mom, arrives. She assures Sonny “Not behind the house, dear. You need to find a better place”” (72). Rather than joining Homer Sr., Elise encourages Sonny to continue with his hobby, only to find a place where less damage could be caused. Sonny is grateful for the encouragement, and uses his mother’s words as a way to continue doing what he loves. Elise is an integral role for her son to keep pursuing his passions. Later on, Homer Sr. is still very unsupportive of Sonny, even wanting him to stop creating rockets forever. Sonny finds this feeling incredible, and is determined to prove his father wrong and build a successful rocket. Talking to Quentin, he relays that “”We’re outlaws now,” I said, savoring the word. “We’re not ever going to quit”” (98). Even with his father’s constant nagging and belittling, Sonny is invigorated to try harder and do more. He uses his father’s negative to push himself towards success, effectively using him as fuel to reach his goal. Despite everything, he is passionate about rockets and uses his family’s words and actions to drive him further.
