When it comes to weekly calls, we all have the families that tend to shy away from picking up and having that conversation. I have tried to shift their mindset to focusing first and foremost on ""how are you?" rather than it being something that I have to do for any particular reason. After they share about their week I ask them if there are any challenges I can help with rather than necessarily pointing out what they do wrong, and they usually identify the problem on their own. Then I can offer solutions and stay in a positive place rather than putting the emphasis on the problem.

I like to start my weekly call on a positive! How are you, did you do anything fun this week? I give a progress update and celebrate an assignment that I loved seeing or grading. Families feel more comfortable at that point and are willing to share any struggles they may be having or questions. I like to build relationships during these calls. This makes families more likely to answer the phone as they know I am not just scolding for not working.

In the welcome call, I ask parents what is the best day/time to call them to check in. I let them know that I honor their time and I want to make sure that I am not interrupting them while they are working or homeschooling. I double check that day/time with them in the 2nd GP call as some of them realize the time/day that they said in the WC does not really work for them. I start our weekly calls with checking in and based on my notes from the previous call and follow up with how can I support you this week. I try to start with positives and follow up with how we can improve this week if needed.

I like to start my weekly calls on a positive note. Before contacting a family, I make sure to have some conversation starters to use them. This makes it easier to be prepared and makes the conversation more about them than the courses. This has helped me build relationships and make my family more comfortable sharing information about their struggles with homeschooling, and the courses, or ask any questions they may have. For families who do not answer when I call, I try to send a positive jpeg with a positive message to let them know that I am reaching out just to check on them or celebrate their hard work.

Norey

For my weekly calls I tend to start with my more challenging families first. By that I mean the families who do not like to answer or are always late submitting work. Usually they don't answer so I like to send fun bitmoji text messages to follow up and always start with something positive like " I hope you had a wonderful relaxing weekend. I miss talking to you and ___! I can't wait to hear back from you both! " I save my families that I know will answer for later on in the week and usually see what the kiddo has planned for the weekend!
