(Jacob Womack)

My favorite part of the book would be the poem "Suffering" on pg. 39. Ruben talks about it's showing that he is struggling with his life already and there are some obstacles already getting in his way. He talks about his uncles drinking all the time. Hes also worried that they might even lead to horrible crimes like "severed hands".

The book itself was already really small, so there wasn't really a lot to get from the book in the first place. The whole story about a kid wanting to go out and explore so he can write a couple of poems is kinda boring. I didn't really like the plot the story had, if there even was one. The characters were really boring too, Ruben didn't change at all in the book and hes the only one we really get to see. In general I didn't like or enjoy this book. (jacob)

I would say the theme of this book would either be something like, "keep on pushing no matter what." Or something like "dont let anything happen to your dreams." Because Ruben goes through a lot during the story like being abandoned for example. But he never stopped writing poems. You could tell that he loved to write poems either as a hobby or just kind of for therapy. He wrote threw out the whole book, each page was its own poem pretty much.(jacob)

(Aurora Bestudik)

My favorite part of the book with a star in my hand is the ending. The last two poems of the book are very beautiful and although I found most of the book very boring the last two poems were very clear to read and understand what he is talking about. The poem "A life time of rebellious rhythms and rhymes" was my overall favorite though, it was the second to last poem and I just though that his wording was very nice and I enjoyed how it was kind of a recap on his life.

The whole book is filled up with small poems. Each and every page is it's own poem, they are all written by Ruben himself and each poem is either how he is feeling, what's going on, or where he is at. The only main page that really isn't a poem that's one page is the very end poem. It's a couple pages long and it shows a lot more character than the other one. It makes the whole book feel like it's like a series of poems from a certain writer/author. (Jacob)

The book title "With a Star in My Hand" is not very specific in a way that is related to the story however I feel like throughout the story Ruben had many dreams and always wanted to make something of himself, and since people make wishes on stars I feel like the connection could be that while making his way through his journey and life he never let go of the idea of his dreams. This would mean that with and star in my hand means keeping his dream in mind.
(Aurora Bestudik)

In the book With a Star in my hand the characters, specifically Ruben, teach us that although situations can get hard and life can definitely not go the way you wanted to you can never give up, especially on your dreams. In the book, Ruben is forced to move and he has to completely restart on life although he did go through a rough patch he ended up picking himself up and remembered his dreams and what he has always wanted to do with his life. The characters teach us that the world can throw things your way that can be dangerous, sad, bad, or even good, and through all of that you have to stay true to yourself.
(Aurora Bestudik)
