The age structure of the UK population is illustrated in the figure below. We can see the peaks in the figure indicates the high number of people aged between 60 and 64 who were born after the Second World War. As well as people aged between 40 and 49 who were born during the 1960s baby boom. Notice that the pyramid shrink for the number of young people aged between 5 to 9 years as a consequence of low birth rate at the beginning of the last century, while it expands the number of people aged between 0 to 4 years as a result of the increase in the birth rate in recent years. The figure also shows that the number of older females is slightly higher than males due to the higher life expectancy of females (82.69 years). While the number of young males is higher than females which indicate that there are slightly more baby boys born each year.

The UK is the third largest economy in Europe after Germany and France since it represents a leading trading power and financial center. The economy of the UK is overwhelmingly supported by the strength of its service sector particularly banking, insurance, and business services which represent 78% of the total GDP. Manufacturing, in the meantime, has dropped in importance but still accounts for about 10% of economic output. Agriculture may have the least contribution to the GDP, but it has vital importance for Britain and Northern Ireland as well as the whole economy of the UK. Agriculture is intensive and highly mechanized, so it produces about 60% of the food demand of the entire nation. The UK also has large coal, oil, and natural gas resources but because of the decline in the oil and natural gas reserves since 2005 the UK became a net importer of energy. Moreover, construction and automotive industries represent one of the largest employers of UK inhabitants by employing approximately five million residents.

Due to the significant importance of the financial sector for the local GDP of the UK, the 2008 global financial crises hit the economy of the country. Along with the dropping home prices, high consumer debt and the global economic slowdown which compounded the UK’s economy problems and pushed the economy into recession in the mid of 2008. The UK government took various measures to induce the economy and stabilize the financial market such as increasing public spending and implementing temporary tax cuts, as well as a five-year austerity program launched in 2010. They have succeeded to cancel out the worst effects of the recession. Nevertheless, the UK still didn’t recover to pre-crises status. In 2012, weak consumer spending, and restrained business investments stagnated the economy, yet in 2013 GDP grew 1.7% and in 2014 2.8%, accelerating because of greater consumer spending and a recuperating housing market. Lately, economists are concerned about the potential damaging impact if the UK left the EU since the UK is one of the fastest growing economies among the G7 countries. The UK has an extensive trade relationship with other EU members through its access to the single market, and economic observers have warned an exit could jeopardize its position as the central location for European financial services.

For more information about UK economy visit https://ig.ft.com/sites/numbers/economies/uk

In the UK 43% of the population are using mobile messenger, 37% are using mobile map services such as Google map, 32% are using mobile banking such as money transfer, 31% are watching videos on mobile, and 24% are playing games on mobile. In the UK people are using mobile devices for e-commerce activities, 79% of the population which represents more than three-quarters the population visited an online retail store in the past 30 days, and the same percentage searched online for a product or service to buy in the past 30 days. 77% purchased a product or a service online in the past 30 days. However, 73% used a laptop or desktop computer to make the purchase, and only 27% used a mobile device.

Directed By: Sarah Gavron

Written By:Abi Morgan

For decades, women had peacefully campaigned for equality and the right to vote. Their arguments were ignored. In response in 1912, Emmeline Pankhurst leader of Suffragette movement, called for a national campaign of civil disobedience. The film represents the story of one group of working women who joined the fight.

The movie depicts a fact-based story took place in the early 20th century where Suffragette feminist movement was an important event in the history of Britain. The movie portrays the life of an ordinary woman Maud Watts who works in an industrial laundry from the age of 7, and lives a typical life where she works the whole day and when she goes back home she takes care of her husband and son. The movie portrayed the role of women as an obedient mother, daughter, and wife who do not have the right to define their destiny, so they are represented by their fathers, brothers or husbands. Women were not equal to men in any way, for example in the laundry women were paid 13 shilling while men were paid 19 shilling a week while women were working more than men. Men think that no one care or listen to women, they are seen as nothing in the world; they also believe that mental equilibrium of female is less than for men. Maud Watts was involved and caught up in the Suffragette by accident because of curiosity and gradually she found herself as a member of the movement group. Because she joined the Suffragette movement, she was rejected by her husband as well as the society including other women. They believe that Maud and another suffragette brings shame to the men to whom they are supposed to obey. After she had lost her husband and son, Maud realized that radicalized and violence is the only route to change. In “Suffragette” protestors fill the streets of London and rebels carry out acts of vandalism, smashing windows and blowing up mailboxes. Maud and other suffragette women were willing to sacrifice everything in their fight for equality; their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.

Men were portrayed in three characters; Sony (Maud’s husband) and Norman Taylor (Maud’s supervisor) and Edith husband. Maud’s supervisor was a portrait of men depravity who take advantage of women’s need and weakness to satisfy their desires. So women low pay and sexual harassment in the laundry was a matter of daily routine. While Sony was too placid to be angry at his wife’s behavior and the decision to embrace the Suffragette cause. Edith husband was a supporter of the Suffragette movement; he helped his wife and the other women throughout the movement. Other men from the supporting characters who portrayed the public despise and disrespect women who fight for their rights.

British government and law also were portrayed in the movie. The government tried to silence and suppress the protesters in any way, they hit, imprisoned and brutalized the women. Additionally, the government encouraged violence against women. While the law was in the men side since they do not allow women to vote and it gave the Sonny the right to custody when Maud joined the Suffragette.

The British press tried to cover all the Suffragette movement developments, but the government suppressed and tamed the journalists’ interest in the story. However, the press insulted and mocked the suffragette members and did not have an unbiased voice. This shows that the press at that time was authoritarian where the government published only what they want the people to know about.

The following sectors of the society were excluded from the movie:

· Women who are not involved in the Suffragette movement.

· People from other ethnic groups living in the UK at that time.

· Men who were supporting the suffragette.

· Movement leader, Emmeline Pankhurst. She appeared only in 5 mins scene.

Although the movie was depicting a real story and written, produced, and acted by British cast it included some stereotypes. All the characters in the movie were white people despite the fact that many Asian and black women participated in the movement. Another stereotype was that all men were resistant to the Suffragette while there were men who played an active role in the suffragette. One man who played a leading role was Frederick Pethick-Lawrence, joint editor of the publication 'Votes for Women' with his wife, Emmeline.

How is globalization impacting the
media in the country?

The globalization of media means that we now have more globalized culturalinfluences available to us in terms of lifestyle choices and consumption. This globalization takes several forms.

Ownership of mass media is no longer restricted by national boundaries. Moguls, such as Rupert Murdoch, and media conglomerates, such as Time Warner, own hundreds of media companies spread throughout the world. Satellite television has opened up the world to the television viewer. Access to the worldwide web via the Internet, global webservers (such as AOL or Google) and new technology (such as wireless broadband) mean that people can access information and entertainment in all parts of the world. Advertising occurs on a global scale and particular brands and logos have become globalized as a result.

The UK reside in an ambivalent position between Europe and the USA. In 1940s Britain was a colonial power in America and heavily depended on the association with the USA. It shares a language with the Americans which it does with no European country except Ireland. Britain also shares a liberal economic culture with the US more eagerly than some other Northern and Western European states do. Shared language and shared neoliberal kinships are amongst the factors that have made the UK open to the penetration of American media and culture. As with the economy and politics Britain is very open to the globalization of culture. Britain’s cultural globalization can be seen in post-colonial inputs into its culture and its relationship to the Americanization of culture, but attitudes to globalization vary between the four countries of the UK. For years the UK have been a multi-national and multicultural country because of the high rate of immigration and the ethnic group diversity. Britain’s culture is already affected by the multi-cultural atmosphere of the country, and by being widely open to the world through the globalization of media, the culture has been affected more severely. The globalization of American culture was derived by the mass culture spreading from the US to other parts of the world, through the propagation of new methods of communications technology.

American cultural exports started off with jazz, film and rock ‘n’ roll US culture has come to be predominant in youth and pop culture, the media, such as cinema and TV, and in a consumerist and individualist economic culture similar in both the USA and UK. The two countries share a language which makes Britain especially open to American cultural imports such as TV programming. So the penetration of American culture in the UK can be exaggerated. Beyond more superficial consumer culture there is differences in the customs, habits and values of people of different nations. British culture can be described as hybridized, open to inputs not just from America and former colonies but broadly from, for instance, Asia, Africa and Latin America when it comes to music, fashion, and food, for example. And British culture is also not just an importer. The dominance of English as a world language is one factor that facilitates the export of British culture, pop music and media. The importing of American culture is linked to the US dominance of the cultural industry through its large media conglomerates and there is an unevenness in production of and access to culture.
