Smudge

2.what is conveyed to the audience about this character, personality traits, class, etc. 
Smudge is a lower class person  who has all of the freedom in the world. she has a very happy life with a loving family and helps her father whenever she can. she shows this when she says that she made her dad a cup of tea as soon as they got home, the book shows us that she is lower class through her father's dialogue, when he looks through the paper to find a job, even though he thinks it is pointless, and she is shown to have a lot of freedom by how she compares to Charles, and how his mother controls his life and treats the dog better than him whereas Smudge's father thinks the world of her and she always makes his day.

5. what is the groups overall impression of the character

2. - The character of Smudge's Dad is conveyed in a variety of ways, this includes a lower class citizen, a caring father to smudge,= and simply a person just trying to get by.
3. - The visual and language features used to convey smudges Dad are spread through every page for example, the font used in his POV is soft and rounded conveying his soft nature, the lighting and aesthetic of his world is dark and gloomy compared to the others and once we see him enter the park his view changes into a lighter setting where in places there were gloom there is now life and light, this conveys his change in attitude which is a result of spending time with his daughter.
5. The groups overall impression of Smudge's Dad is that he is a lower class citizen who has a healthy relationship with his daughter smudge and is able to escape his current life of gloom by taking his daughter to the park.

Charles is a quite child who has grown up in a wealthy family. It is clear in a upper class family, as he lives in a nice house with his family, the font used for his view of the walk in the park is neater, and he sounds more formal compared to Smudge. His clothing is also formal which hints to his family's wealth. his mother and him don't have a very close family relationship, as his mother prefers their dog Victoria over her son. His mother treats their dog more like her own child more than she treats Charles like her son.
"Sit, here" is what she says to Charles when the get to the park and he follows her instructions. 
"Charles come here at once.", "And come her please Victoria"
Everywhere he goes, even if he's not with his mother he always has her voice in the back of his mind and seems like he is constantly trying to please her. 
He talks about when they first arrive at the park how much fun Victoria is having with the other dog and envies that. 
When Charles first meets Smudge he says "... It was a girl unfortunately" which hints that from his relationship with his mother he struggles with girls, but by the end of the book, it seems as though Smudge has broken his thoughts on that all girls are the same, because smudge mentions that Charles gave her and flower before he left with his mother. 
The more the two play the more open to fun Charles becomes, he starts to enjoy himself and his new company. At the end of his chapter when he is leaving he mentions "Maybe Smudge will be there next time?". 
As his chapter goes on we see his character unfold and become more open to thing he might have not have been so confident with before.

Charles is in the upper class of society and is a well taught child. Charles' mum mentions that their dog is Pedigree which would indicate that they are quiet wealthy alone with the house that they live in which is pictured. He speaks fluently and is polite young person as he is invited to play with Smudge he shows her how to climb trees and becomes friends with her . It seems as though Charles isn't shown very much love and is lonely even though he has a dog his mother treats the dog with more respect and even some times calls Charles as you would call a dog. 3. Smudge is really good with picking up people's emotions/feelings because she noticed that her dad was fed up and needed a break. This was done to build on what type of character she is for example caring and considerate.

 In all of the images she is smiling and happy this then spreads to other people  for example she gives hope and makes her father's life brighter. She makes him see the good in the world again. 
She also makes Charles feel very happy for she truly appreciates him unlike Charles' mother. And you can see how Charles world changes when he plays with her on the see-saw. And when he has to go with his mother back how his smile is off his face.

The author wants his target audience to the vibe that Smudge has grown up with a dad who is quite sad a lot of the time and is in a dark place. Smudge is pretty close too her dad and makes him happy and makes him feel like he's done something good like when they went to the park and they were walking home she was really happy and had a good time so that made her dad feel good about himself and that he had achieved something. She looks after her dad and keeps him company a lot and I think her dad relies on her a bit because when they went to the park smudge said 'so I was pleased when he said we could take Albert to the park', he says 'we' a lot he likes having the company of Smudge which portrays Smudge to be a joyful person to be around and lightens anyone's mood and is very considerate of what others might be feeling and she does anything she can to help them feel better.

2. Charles' Mum is portrayed as being upper class and the mention of her dog being pedigree would suggest she is quite wealthy. She appears to be very posh in the way she speaks. Charles' Mum also seems to feel superior towards other people, and this is shown multiple times throughout the book, in particular, when she speaks about Charles playing with a 'rough-looking child.'
4. The author want the audience to feel a slight distance from the character, and uses Charles' Mum as a antagonist in the story. There is no emotion felt towards the character, and her mannerisms through the novel are very cold.
