John is one of protagonists who has grown up outside of the World State. He has never visited the New World, and has grown up on the Savage Reservation.  
His mother, Linda, attempts to teach him morals from the New World, like reading, leading him to be different from his peers. For this reason he is ostracized from the others on the reservation.

Shakespeare writes with immense passion and emotion that encapsulates love, beauty, and pain. Huxley incorporates Shakespeare's great works, "The Tempest" and "Romeo and Juliet" into John's story. John quotes "The Tempest" when he is in awe by the beautiful people residing in the World State, "O wonder! […] How many goodly creatures there are here! How beauteous mankind is! […] O brave new world […]. O brave new world. […] O brave new world that has such people in it!" (139) The reoccurring quote from "The Tempest" expresses his complex emotions of amazement. "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare is another great work alluded in BNW. When John catches sight of Lenina, he is stunned by her beauty and is infatuated with her. John quotes a line from Romeo and Juliet to Lenina, "On the white wonder of Juliet's hand, may seize, And steal immortal blessing  from her lips, who, even in pure and vestal modesty, still blush, as thinking their own kisses sin." John completes these things individually by whipping and crucifying himself because Jesus influences him greatly. He wants to connect himself to religion the only way that he can on his own since nobody wants to include him in their group activities.
