As a school counselor, I believe...

This lesson aims to create a visual to show how bullying affects others, define bullying for students, and open up a discussion about ways to prevent or stop bullying when you see it. This lesson was created for students in grades 3-6 so the challenge would be adapting this lesson for grades K-2, as my targeted population is grades K-6. For K-2 I may read a picture book about bullying, play out a bullying scenario with puppets, and create a simple visual/poster that defines what bullying is. For kindergarteners, they may have never heard of the term bullying before, so I would make sure to assess their background knowledge on the topic.

Program Assessment: School counselors annually assess the design and delivery of their school counseling program. Evaluating the program helps identify strengths and weaknesses, and helps counselors figure out what needs improvements. The assessments encourage counselors to be reflective and can start discussions of where to go. These assessments assess participation during lessons, mindsets and behaviors, and outcome data.

Annual Results Report

There are two types of annual results reports.

1. Classroom and Group Mindsets and Behavior Results Report

2. Closing the Gap Results Report

These reports help counselors assess the counseling program for effectiveness, identify student needs, and create improved activities and interventions.

The reports are analyzed by counselors to examine whether student learning and student outcomes improve. If not, they can create an action plan of what needs to be improved.

School Assessment and Appraisal

The ASCA Professional Standards and Competencies Assessment is filled out by counselors to self-assess their knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Self-assessing helps counselors identify their effectiveness in the profession.

Performance Appraisal is completed annually by an administrator. A performance appraisal is mostly developed with state and district guidelines in mind. Administrators evaluate a school counselor's performance based on state/district guidelines.
