Because of the Kansas Nebraska Act, there was no law about when a territory could decide about slavery due to the doctrine of "popular sovereignty". This led to the north and the south fight for the control of the territory. Brooks, who was the nephew of one of the senators that was insulted, "avenged the Southern honor" by beating up Sumner viciously with a cane.  Brooks resigned before he was censured by the House but was then reelected by the people of his congressional district and was named a Southern hero while Sumner, whose health was never fully recovered, became a Northern martyr.  This was significant to the outbreak of the war because Sumner's empty seat in the Senate showed how Northern and Southern leaders were no longer on speaking terms, dividing the North and South even further.  ]]> 2021-02-09 19:09:53 UTC https://padlet.com/carinapan/1a4khgm27oag0qqm/wish/1184139981 alexiarojas https://padlet.com/carinapan/1a4khgm27oag0qqm/wish/1184141922 Dred Scott, a slave, had been taken by his master to Illinois, where the Northwest Ordinance prohibited slavery, and then to Minnesota where slavery had been prohibited by the Missouri Compromise and then returned to Missouri, where he sued for his freedom. This case was brought to the Supreme Court to decide whether he was a free man and a citizen of the United States. The Supreme Court decided that he was a slave despite his travels and that he was not a citizen of Missouri, in a decision of 7 to 2. Chief Justice stated in his decision that black individuals could not be citizens and that the Constitution allowed people their right to own slaves, or property and that the Constitution was made by and for white men only. This meant that Congress could do nothing about slavery in the territories and the people did not have the power to to restrict or abolish slavery until they applied for admission as a state. After capturing the arsenal, they went around nearby estates of farms and forcibly freed about 30 slaves. Countryside found out and fought back. 5 of Brown's followers escapes while the rest are holed up in the arsenal. Surviving members of Brown's group gets captured. Remaining 10 either killed or wounded. Survivors were hanged but Brown's last words while he was tried inspired millions of slaves to fight back. This event is significant to the outbreak of war because although the raid was unsuccessful , it created tensions and raised the stakes for the 1860 presidential election. Lincoln won the electoral college and Douglass won the popular vote.When Lincoln won the election overall, South Carolina joined with the other five states in the south(Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia) and later on Texas to form a new nation called The Confederate States of America. Fort Sumter was one of the few strong positions that were given to the United States troops. Lincoln finds out that Fort Sumter needs food. If he doesn't have food to give, the South would have Fort Sumter and no civil war but also no union. If he gave food, it would become a fight and start a civil war. Lincoln decides to hold onto Fort Sumter but also decides that he would get the first shot.
