Why Would People Become Nuns?

There were many reasons that people would become nuns in the middle ages. Just a few of them would be that they would become a nun for religious reasons, become a nun to get an education, or even to get out of an a forced marriage.

One of the things that nuns would do in the middle ages was preserving many artifacts and also preserving literature and religious texts. Since they would preserve literature and other things that could be used to teach people. Many young girls would join nunneries to get a good education.

Nuns would also exchange knowledge by having someone carry their messages to each other back and forth

Every day a nun would attend three services one at two A.M., one at seven A.M. and one more later in the day. When they weren't attending these services they would be doing things like cooking, cleaning, reading, writing, praying, and many other basic tasks.

Some people would becomes nuns because it helped them gain respect in the middle ages. Some also joined because the nuns would live a cleaner lifestyle than most people in the middle ages and had more knowledge about things like healing.

Nuns had to take vows of poverty, which means that they had to live like the poor. So even tough they had more money they would eat very basic meals and would use many things that weren't necessities. They also had to take vows of obedience and chastity.

Nuns also had to devote their lives to god. So that meant that a lot of their time was spent worshiping god.

I think that the men of the church in the middle ages didn't want nuns to have to much power or too much knowledge because they didn't want other women to start becoming more independent, as in the middle ages most women would not get an education and they would also stay home and take care of their families house, cook, clean, and take care of their children.
