A single note. The base of all music. This concept brings to life all of music itself, constantly changing and staying the same all in one piece of music. But the concept of just one note individually can be one of many things. It can be a whole note or a 16th note or even a 256th note. There are many different ways to interpret this but I believe the one Ratliff is describing is the repetition of the same note. Such as in the song “Thelonious” there are very repetitive pats in in. Much like modern music today with the constantly repeating chorus and the same notes within that chorus all the time. But this repetition can represent something like stubbornness or unchanging and is usually trying to make a pint, and I feel like this is lost in modern music of today. Purpose to each individual note and sequence.
