Martin received frequently death threats due to his prominence within the civil rights movement. He was forced to face the risk of dying, but knowingly overturned the consequences and argued that not even an assassination could stop the fight for equal rights.

He went to Memphis, Tennessee, to support African American sanitation workers who staged a strike to protest unequal wages and working conditions.

When he returned on April 3 for a meeting at the Mason Temple, his flight was disrupted by a bomb threat, but he still gave his final speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop," where he explained that he feared no one, not even the death. But when he was out on the balcony in front of his room the next day at 6:01 pm he was hit with a single bullet. There were witnesses who saw a man, later recognized as James Earl Ray, run away from a house across the street from the Motel and so a worldwide manhunt was launched which led to Ray's arrest at London airport two months later.
