Both of my grandmothers were Germans who married American military men. I spent my first 10 years living in Germany, with my dad working at one of the military bases there. So I am pretty close with my German heritage.

I will say, as a white woman my cultural perspective is to some degree the default in American Society. Beyond culture fairs in elementary school where I decorated a trifold board and made Christmas Stollen to hand out as a snack - my cultural heritage was never a major factor in understand me as a student in class.

Both of my parents are from Mexico, born and raised, though I have lived my entire life in the United States. As such, I have always felt a sort of split cultural heritage, where I feel pretty equally Mexican as well as American.

My experiences were fairly solid. Of course, there were a few ignorant comments made while I was in middle school, but nothing extreme and nothing that could not be handled well.

I identify as Black or African American. My family is from South Carolina and Virgina. I have learned a ton over the past 4 years about some of the culutral differences within the hispanic community as my student come from El Salvador, Guatamala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Colombia and other places. We spend time learning about each country's history and traditions

My paternal grandparents were immigrants from the UK; my grandmother survived the Blitz in WWII in her hometown of Birmingham in England, and my grandfather was from Edinburgh. Unfortunately, it was never really of any interest in school.

When I was in Catholic school, we learned about other Christmas traditions in other countries, which was fun.

Learning to differentiate ethnic from ethnicity was very interesting to me. I also found the approach of distinguish in culture and race to be thought-provoking.

One thing to look into perhaps might be looking into how multi-cultural groups of students work together and how they perceive/interact with each other. We think a lot about the interactions between teachers and students, but what about between the students themselves?

My mentor teacher is planning on taking our classes to the Baltimore Blacks in Wax museum. It should be really fun/interesting to see them engage with aspects of African American culture seeing as the school is 88% African American.

I live in Owings Mills right now, so I would like to learn more about Maryland Jewish history and Ashkenazi culture. I worked at the Jewish Museum of Maryland for a summer, but I still haven't experienced a classroom setting where I've had Jewish students preparing for the holidays.
