Molly and Katie and marmar

Imperialism, Mercantilism, and racism.

During this time the trade was a prominent business and is what this novel is based of off. Race was interwoven into this by the traders being of one race and making the other race feel inferior. The historical context of the time sets the stage for the interactions between characters and also the inner thoughts of those characters, as we see with Marlow. He clearly is a product of the time, and his mindset is heavily influenced by imperialism and the idea of spreading the empire to protect the weaker "savages" by "civilizing" them. The way he seems unable to acknowledge the humanity of those oppressed is not unlike the mindset of other colonizers, and the time period he is in allows for this.

These three themes really drive the trade that the book is centered around.

Flies also go towards corpses -> decaying and true rotteness of humanity.

Boats- typically a symbol of freedom, exploration, navigation, discovery, and adventure, but in HOD it reprsents the arrival of the conquerer and represents destruction. Marlow’s own boat in Part 2 is incomplete sort of representing his own beliefs with the Company’s ideology (he is unsure, indecisive of his own beliefs in the imperialism of the conquering).

Painting - symbolism of (in)justice and the blindness of the people in the company to the horrors of what they are doing in the Congo. Also a symbol of conformity and assimilation forced on the native people of conquered lands as the woman in the painting is representative of the Statue of Liberty, which comes from France.
