In terms of being able to spread the message, hands down, extremely well done. Utilizing social media allowed the event to expand its views and message and allowed the event to reach people on the other side of country. However, the one downside to this is that there are people who just say #HeForShe just to join in on the bandwagon. People like these don't really contribute to the movement. Even though they spread the word, they themselves don't exactly do anything to make the change. I believe that the hashtag activism is a really important tool because it allows more people to join in on the event rather than having a protest in one city. Having an online campaign compared to protesting, you are able to have even more people join in on the event. People would much rather support something online and attempt to make change than to go to a protest and injure themselves or others in a live protest. Another plus side to shifting to the online world is that we can all be anonymous. Being anonymous is important in the 21st century because it protects our identity. Many times you have people who secretly support an event but are too afraid to speak up because they are afraid to reveal their identity. At times, you may be the only person within your friend group supporting an event but the rest of the friend group may not feel the same way so you just "go with the flow" just to remain friends. Remaining anonymous allows those without a voice to have a voice. Hashtags create an easy message that is short and concise. It allows people to find an event, a picture, or a group super easily. Hashtags can help you categorize your event and sort is with efficiency. However, the downsides are that some people will attack and abuse the hashtag and push others to do the complete opposite.
