Dear Tortured Teen,

It sounds like you have a lot going on, Holden. There are times when people just want to give up, but giving up does not solve problems or make things easier to deal with. It will not be easier for you , and it will not be easier for your family. Running away from your problems will only create new problems wherever you run to. The ducks do leave for the winter, but the ducks are a different type of animal. The fish, however, the fish stick it out. If you want think of yourself like an animal, you should think about the fish. They fight through the winter and Mother Nature takes care of them. If you were like a fish, and if you tried to stick it out and solve your problems instead of running away, you will find that eventually things get better.

If you choose to stay and not run away to start over, I think you should go to a counselor to talk to someone on a regular basis. It sounds like you are not over your brother's death yet. When you lose someone important to you, especially when that person is young, it is often very hard to deal with. After Allie died, it sounds like you went off to a prep school, which means you didn't have your family with you when you were grieving. And if you were kicked out of four schools, you likely were not able to make any really close friends. People need connections and relationships with other people. When we lose someone, we lose part of ourselves as well. That hole in your life with not go away, but it will fade with help. You need to talk to your parents, talk to a professional, talk to someone you trust, and they will be able to help you and get you the attention that you need. I believe that you are very smart kid, and I have complete faith that you will be successful in life, but you need to believe in yourself as well.

From, Abby

Dear Abby,

My name is Holden, and I'm 16 years old. I'm all mixed up. Sometimes I feel ok - happy even - and other times, I feel like the loneliest person in the world. I just got kicked out of Pencey Prep, and I don't to tell my parents because it's the fourth school that has given me the ax since my brother died. Oh yeah, my brother, Allie died three years ago. He was the nicest kid ever. He died of leukemia when he was 11. The night he died, I punched out all the windows in my garage, and I tried to punch the car windows, but my hand was already broken. I was in the hospital during the funeral, but I didn't want to go to the funeral anyway. I hate going to the cemetery to see his grave. My mom puts flowers on his grave, but "who wants flowers when you're dead? Nobody." I don't mind going to his grave when it's sunny, but when it's raining, it's so depressing. Everyone runs to their cars and goes to have dinner some place nice. Everyone but Allie.

Anyway, what I need advice about is what I'm going to do about school and about my parents. Should I move out west and just get away from here? I could a get a job and pretend to be a death mute so that I wouldn't have to talk to anyone. Stupid conversations are the worst. I guess my sister, Phoebe, would miss me. She likes me quite a lot. She kills me. She is only 10, but she is smart and he understands things. She's not like most 10 year old kids. You tell old Phoebe something and she gets it. The thing is though, I'm quite illiterate, so I don't think I am going to start applying myself if they put me in another school. I read a lot, but I'm illiterate. I swear. I think it will just be better for everyone if I just leave. The ducks leave in the winter. I could leave to. Just start over.

From, Tortured Teen
aka Holden Caulfield
