Before Brown's raid at the armory, he was very heavily involved in the conflict in Bleeding Kansas as he believed that God had given him the duty to. He had also helped create a society in Canada for free slaves that even had its own constitution but never really was able to get its footing (Chicago).

Reasons for The Raid's Failure

Although Brown's intentions were good the raid was almost destined for failure from the very start. Firstly he only had 18 men which was a tiny number compared to the number of town militia and eventually the marines he would have to fight off. The main reason for the failure was that the whole purpose of this was to try to recruit slaves from the area to join in and lead the way for the revolt. Brown also was very poor at combat strategy and was not able to plan well for when the company of Marines led by Robert E. Lee Stormed into the engine room where they had tried to barricade themselves in. There were even some people accused of being involved in it who may or may not have been (Chicago).

John Brown was widely considered to be a hero with northern abolitionists. Some even marched to a song dedicated to him by the name of "John Brown's Body" (Carson). On the other hand the South tried to accuse all of the Northerners of being part of Brown's crime but in truth was only backed by a small group of abolitionists who were supporters of Brown.
