Edward Curtis was a famous photographer in the early 1920s. He was one of the first photographers to pioneer documentary photography. Documentary photography captures the culture and ways of living of many people. Edward Curtis documented the lives of Native Indians in the Western United States. His work provided insight to fellow Americans of the lives of Indians. He glorified their lifestyle and outlined the way people view American Indians. Curtis received respect from many famous figures including, Theodore Roosevelt and JP Morgan. He started an American Indian Project to document the culture, ceremonies, and tribes of American Indians because he believed one day that the tribes will be assimilated into modern day culture and would no longer exist. Edward Curtis finished his documentary series with 700 portfolio images, 1,500 volume size images, and 7,000 pages of text.
-Carissa Lucas

The photo was of the Kwakiutl tribe after a wedding ceremony. The caption provided by Curtis states "After the wedding ceremony at the bride's village the party returns to the husband's home. The newly married pair stand on a painted "bride's seat" in the stern of the canoe, and the bridegroom's sister or other relative, dances on a platform in the bow, while the men sing and rhythmically thump the canoes with the handles of their paddles."

Genthe captured the panic and confusion that pervaded the city and presaged the vast damage yet to come: by the end of the third day, more than four square miles of San Francisco had been leveled. Adding to the trauma of earthquake and fire were the controlled explosions of dynamite meant to eliminate structurally compromised buildings. Documenting this chaotic travesty in history holds importance to the many natural disasters that have taken place in America.
Jennifer E

Impressions of Old New Orleans 1926-Arnold Genthe

Making two trips to New Orleans, Genthe intended to document the city’s Old World charm before modern life changed it forever. He quickly discovered, however, that he was already too late. While evidence of modernism was everywhere, even in the historic French Quarter, Genthe did not let this deter him from making a picturesque portrayal of the city. Old New Orleans was difficult to capture before its modernization, but with the help of Arnold some of its origins will be remembered.
Jennifer E
