I think it's a really nice quote to always remember from that book.

This means not everything that's good that happens in your life will last forever. So Johnny is saying to Ponyboy that he needs to stay gold and not let that gold and good moments fade away. He's making sure that Ponyboy will cherish his good moments while they last.
