summary: Losing their parents at a young age, Ryuko was to be put into an orphanage. Afraid of the possibility that they may be unsafe in the orphanage, Ryuko flees. After roaming around the outskirts of Tokyo, Ryuko is finally noticed by two older kids, about 13 years old. The two offer Ryuko some bread, and they eagerly scarf it down. Soon, Ryuko is introduced to a gang, consisting mainly of young teenagers. The gang is very loosely run, and only cooperates with each other when shelter or food is scarce. Either way, joining the gang guarantees the member a place to live, as well as a monthly supply of food, as long as the member agrees to provide the gang with a quarter of any goods they may come across. Desperately needing shelter, Ryuko agrees, and, in turn, introduces himself to Japan’s underground society.
