February 1960 Sit-in Protest

Cause: During this time, many colored people of America were not allowed to sit in the "white parts" of a restaurant. These "sit-ins" were a nonviolence protest during the Civil Rights Movement.

Connection: When I went to Washington D.C, I saw a lunch counter that had been put into a museum (Smithsonian) and if you looked under the counter, you could see all the gum that was left there. That's 50+ year old gum!

April 3 - May 10 1963 - Police arrest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Cause: MLK was one of the many people that got arrested during a non violent protests in Birmingham, Alabama. This March was due to the lack of voting rights.

Effect: MLK's famous, "Letters from Birmingham Jail" were written while he was in jail in Alabama.

June 11, 1963- Little Rock Nine

Effect: JFK sent in military troops to protect the Little Rock Nine (nine colored students) from police, upset white people, and really and racist town members. Integrating a school like this, in a state where the government was very for segregation, was a big step in the Civil Rights Movement.

August 28, 1963 - March on Washington. King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech

Effect: This speech, even today, is probably one of the most best-known and popular speeches from this time period. During the March on Washington, MLK JR, a civil rights activist, gave his most famous, "I have a dream.." speech infront of thousands of people.

July 2, 1964 - President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Effect: This act made it illegal for segregation to be applied on public places, integration in schools, and made employment denial for the colored illegal. This was a giant step forward in the Civil Rights Movement.

February 21, 1965 - Civil Rights leader Malcolm X is Murdered

Cause: What is believed to be the main cause of Malcolm X's assassination, is his abrupt religion change, where I believe he went to join another group of a similar religion. It is thought that he was murdered by his old religion group, that encouraged him to turn his life away from crime, and become a civil rights activist.

August 6, 1965 - President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Effect: This act made it illegal for anyone in the US to make voting acts that were designed to deny colored voters. This made it possible for African-Americans to vote.

April 4, 1968 - Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis Tennessee

Effect: After MLK's assassination, the people for the Civil Rights Movement were devastated. Both of their most powerful speakers, MLK and Malcolm X, were now murdered. A wave of violence erupted across the nation and America was now spiraling.

December 1955 Montgomery Bus boycott - launched in, Alabama, after Rosa parks is arrested

Cause: During this time, the Civil Rights Movement had a big impact on people. The "separate but equal" law did not satisfy black citizens living in America. On buses, colored people were encouraged to sit in the back, so white people could sit more towards the front. When Rosa Parks, sat in the white part of the bus, she was kicked off and arrested. This was a major part of the Civil Rights Movement.

May 4th, 1970: Kent State shootings

Cause: Many people were angry about the Vietnam War draft, so they protested. Many Americans from the Asian community also protested against the war due to the fact that they could face racism because of their connections to Vietnam. Some were peaceful marches, and others were violent attacks.

Effect: The protesters burnt down a ROTC building. This left four protesters shot dead, and eight others wounded.

June 13th, 1971: Pentagon Papers Released

Effect: After the Pentagon Papers were released, many Americans lost trust in the government, and even their own leader. People were angry that these papers were hidden from them in the first place.

October 6, 1973: Yom Kippur War

Effect: Nixon ordered airlifts to bring supplies to the Israelis. This angered Americans because first, the US houses The Shah for better healthcare and to get away from the millions rebelling against him. Then, they are helping Israel after the whole scandal. This really hurt Americans.

August 9th, 1974: Nixon resigns

Cause: The main reason for former President Nixon's resignation is the Watergate scandal. Nixon hid so much from America, and then blamed it on others around him. Nixon decided it would be best for America to resign. He had to take a step backwards, so the rest of us could move forward.

April 30th, 1975: Fall of Saigon

Effect: The Vietnam War was not at all successful for America. When North Vietnam soldiers moved in to attack Saigon, Americans fled and the South had no choice but to surrender. North Vietnam captured Saigon and slowly turned it communist.

August 11th, 1978: American Indian Religious Freedom Act

Cause: Many Native Americans were assimilated and forced to really adapt the ways of white people. They were forced off their lands and stripped of their culture and way of life. Native Americans were inspired by the Black Panthers and protested for their rights. This resulted in the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. This way, they had sacred lands all to themselves, and would not and could not be prosecuted for their religion.

September 17th, 1978: Camp David Accords

Effect: The Camp David Accords normalized relations between Egypt, the US, and Israel. This was good for the US because they had two more "allies," and did not have to worry about two more "enemies."
