Last holiday we with a group of teachers from different parts of our country and our families took a part in a location based game situated in a large garden in Veltrusy (a town near Prague). We followed instructions given by a virtual gardener and learnt about history of the place, about nature and finally we got a treasure - a chest - and when we used a special app with AR we saw the treasure - very rare beetle living in the garden. It was wonderful experience for all of us.

Currently, we are trying to raise money for making something similar in a park near our school.

As a participant of the "Sharing landscapes" Comenius course which was held on Lesbos in 2013 I experienced outdoor learning myself.

One of the course activities was undertaken in the Natural History Museum in Sigri. Our task was to find interesting facts about the exibits and share them with the other members of the group. We used iPads to code the information and each QR code was printed. Next stage of the activity was presentation. It took place in the Petrified Forest (UNESCO World Heritage Site), managed by the NHM. Each member of the group read aloud one text using an iPad and the QR code reader. The group discussed it with the author.

This activity can be easily applied at the school level. It provides opportunities to learn about a specific topic. Students are engaged in finding interesting facts, reflecting on them, presenting them to the group, commenting, disscussing. And they use ICT at the same time

I like outdoor learning, even though it can be more demanding to plan and execute all by yourself and have 25+ students with you. However, students seem to like it, they connect more what they learn to the real world and their imagination is more open. Simple problem solving skills can be trained, students become independent, but also learn to work in pairs or in small groups. Of course, some of the drawbacks are maintaining discipline and having everyone do what they are supposed to do, but that can be easily overcome by setting out the rules and a detailed workplan. In my lessons outdoor students used their mobile devices to take photos of the nature and their surroundings. We documented everything in our eTwinning project called "The View through Our Window" which can be found on this link: http://theviewfromourwindow.blogspot.com/

We observed the nature throughout the year and took photos from a single spot in our school and had various activities connected to that project. Here is the final video that sums up that project:

We do several outdoor learning activities during the year, but don't use that many devices or apps...let's say not yet.

The last week of each school year is dedicated to several outdoor activities like geocaching, open-air museum, visiting a biogs plant and wind power station, which includes a nice hike, and several other excursions.

Each year we take grade 9 students to England; this year we linked that to another excursion at home. Later students combined the facts gathered in both tours and prepared presentations. In June we were in South England and also visited Osborne House, Queen Victoria's summer residence, on the Isle of Wight, in July we went to Schloss Callenberg near Coburg, 30km from where we live. Queen Victoria's mother and Prince Albert's father were born there, and from there the family started to 'conquer' several royal families.

The photo you see here was taken during a meeting for an eTwinning project. A colleague, who is very active in geocaching, helped prepare a special tour through town, leading Polish and German students to several places related to history. The little brochure presents the essential information, coordinates, etc. and also leaves room for adding the facts students had to find out.

After this learning event I see some nore activities we could link to that, like mapping or creating timelines.

ThThis LE suggested me the idea that outdoor activities can be not only in the presence of the teacher, which is almost impossible in our case, but may be workloads for groups of students. What we must to do in this case is to guide them to use mobile devices and apps equired.

The applications that we used to keep in touch and collaborate with a partner class in a city far have been Skype for video conferencing and Bambuser for live streaming. As can be seen from filming the students were thrilled and have learned so much in a quiet and relaxing. The major drawback was the loss of connection at certain times, since we were near a river in the countryside. The activities were part of an educational project on the environment.

Live streaming from the river: http://bambuser.com/v/1684870
