Vanport Flood

Before I started researching I kinda knew about it but barely my great grandpa lived there kinda told me about it. As I researched more I found out they said as they say they were "swollen by weeks of heavy rain." It was fifteen feet higher than the floodplain. The section of the railroad berm collapsed. It was sad but more than 18000 residents were left without homes, many were colored people also 15 people died. Some climb roofs to survive. I think this is important to black history because so many people were black residents it caused migration forcing them to move somewhere else or be homeless.

Black Panthers

Before I did this I really didn't know much but I found out the Black Panthers were founded in 1966 Huey p.newton and Bobby Seale founded them. the Black Panther Party helped fight back against police brutality against colored citizens. also helped poor people, gave them free shoes launched 35 survival programs helped with education, and more.

nina simone was born February 21, 1933, Tyron nc her real name is Eunice Waymon she started playing piano at the age of 5. she started at a nightclub in Atlantic City she changed her name after 1961. she got into civil rights she used her music as her voice Mississippi god damn, to young gifted and black. she died in April of 2003 to breast cancer she so important to black history she inspired so many people with her voice especially people of color.

may 28 1944 gladys maria knight was born. later on gladys and her brother sisters and cousins begain preforming together during her brothers birthday. they stuck with the group and called them selfs the pips. they started touring in 1957 playing exclusivelly to black audiences throughout the south. she apears in 7 films she went solo in the late 1980s she recored 2 number 1 songs "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "That's What Friends Are For.

Paul Knaula is well know in Portland Paul was born in Huntington Arkansas

1931 he went to school 37 miles away from him after graduated he joined the air force 1949 he set base at Spokane Washington he wanted to own a business he worked 3 jobs he came to Portland he visited the clubs everthing was packed he knew someone that had one that wasnt. "the cotton club"

he bought the club fixed it up it started becoming popular playing jazz and soul

kent ford

kent Ford was bored in Maringouin Louisiana he moved to Cail at the age of 12. later on he got in trouble with the police and moved to Portland in 1961 he started a candy business. Ford intervened while police were arresting a man and getting beaten assaulted and put in jail at a $80000 bail for inciting a riot. after the shooting of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 he and a group of 20 others started regularly meeting to discuss the writings of Malcolm X and other activists. he was beaten and jailed just for that he got out and organized a press conference for what happened. shortly after that Huey Newton invited him to form and lead the portland black panthers with him there were 50 members half of whom were women kent ford is important because he helped lead the portland panthers to help people of color in Portland

snipes is an army veteran who was killed for voting. Snipes was born in Taylor County Georgia March 25 1909 On February 8th, 1943, 33-year-old Snipes enlisted in the army. he was stationed in New Guinea he returned to the States in September 1945. and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for his service and was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Private First Class. he returned back home for work opportunities and he thought he could vote because he fought the war. during the Georgia Gubernatorial election the governor made threats toward people of color of voted. yet he still voted in 1946 July 17 the following day 4 men road up to his mother's house called him out and shot him

WILLIAM GOINES

GOINES was the first black Navy Seal. Goines was born in Dayton Ohio he went to all-Black Lockland Wayne High School. he watched a movie there mainly focused on Navy seale stuff he began to learn how to swim in a nearby creek, Little Miami River, and a pool in Hartwell. in 1955 he graduated then joined the navy UDT member, he was assigned to Malta for 11 months. in 1957 he graduated after 3 weeks of udt training 1962 he joined a unit to conduct unconventional warfare. and clandestine operations Goines served in Cuba, three tours in Vietnam, and other classified missions worldwide.

old Portland newspapers

I looked at the newspaper in the 1981 by d.k Charles Black community activist seeks District 18 House seat. what I learned was Mrs. Loving was trying to run for the Portland district in the state legislature. She was one of the original members of the black united front She ran for the Democratic primary for the District 18 House seat. in 1981 many Portlanders fought hard to make a district for blacks so they could have advantages to political strength. 40 percent of black residents is the result of that. I wonder if she got the job.i think what she doing right now in 2024

1981 school closures

before reading about this I really didn't know Jefferson almost got shut down this is cool to look at the students in the 1981 protest I go to Jefferson. Anyway, I learned that they tried shutting Jefferson and two other schools. Jefferson is the only school that didn't get shut down fully because they said low enrollment in middle school. Jefferson was the first black student concentration school I go to Jefferson now I feel like it is a mix of students. in the picture you can see people of color at Jefferson holding signs protesting. cause they don't want their school to get shut down. I feel like they were racist they didn't have to shut down the highest black student schools
