After delivering a speech that was prompted by his own catharsis of realizing the true injustice of the top corporation and society towards the minorities, the main character is forced to flee when the police show up. He meets a woman who says that the best way to be effective is to be invisible.

This quote shows the situation the black race were forced to be in. In a society prejudiced against black people, the only way for them to carry a voice in society and thus be "effective" they had to be unseen- invisible to society so the main character is not forced to be someone else. It doesn't make much sense to the main character why he is trying to be invisible at first and repress who he truly is, but he still does it because he realizes that he can no longer be who society wants him to be, because then he would not be true to himself. Society caused him to be invisible. Effectiveness is being true to yourself.
Denial to realization to acceptance. Realizes that the only way to be effective in his perspective was to be invisible. For being true to himself and invisible is more powerful than being fake and visible.

The MC is calling himself invisible and explaining how society is trying to force him to be a white man, but he'd rather be himself and his personality. In reality, the society is the one that is truly invisible because they are the ones that are not being true to themselves and are thus becoming invisible, assimilating into what other think or want them to be.

Society is trying to force him to conform into a white culture and way of being, so he realizes that they only view him as a race and a skin color. Thus, he realizes that it is better to be invisible as it makes it impossible to see his race, and so all that is left of him is his own personality and character and that is what he wants in the end.

Although the Brotherhood promises a life of comfort, good pay, and relative easiness to the narrator, he still feels uneasy about opening himself up to that sort of publicity. The flash of panic that the speaker feels speaks volumes to his desire to remain unnoticed, invisible. Fearful of becoming "someone else" defines the narrator as someone who feels he is himself only when invisible. To become visible, the speaker would become someone that is not him, someone who loses his true character and becomes a simple puppet and machine of an organization. Someone who is defined solely based on his race, the color of his skin. Realizing this horror, the sense of panic previously mentioned warns the narrator that he can only avoid becoming someone else by remaining invisible and in the shadows.

The narrator starts off his narrative stating that he is invisible. He does not mean literally, but rather that his personality is invisible. When people see him, they associate him and all other black people as a group rather than individuals. They would be lucky even if they were seen as human. Many white people see blacks as animals and not has people who have feelings. The author is proud of his invisibility because the alternative is morphing into someone he is not. White people think that blacks should be like them, but in reality that would not make the blacks happy. When whites see blacks they choose to not see reality because the truth is not pretty. They want to believe that their world is perfect and they do not have to change a thing. In other words, the white people purposely look the other way because they do not want to admit that they are a large part of the problem.

The continuing motif of invisibility is perhaps the most important running theme of the Invisible Man. The narrator continuously struggles, either consciously or subconsciously with many of the other characters, both white and black in race. After being exposed for all his life to the horrific nature of Southern racism to the more subliminal, and still terrible, stereotypes of the North, the speaker realizes that the nature of society in his day and age labels him as black and nothing else, a superficial classification that begets bigotry. Through his experiences in this, the narrator realizes that to avoid becoming a puppet of others he must rise above the simplistic racial views. To become truly free the speaker became invisible, deciding that this was the only way for himself to throw away being only looked upon based on his race and instead being an actual person with a true personality and character.
