         <title>Heat shield</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Heat shields (a blunt curved plate) are solid surfaces that protect reentry capsules from the extreme heat or atmospheric friction. Most common type of heat shields use ablative tile cover that also provide insulation for the capsule interior. How?<br><br>Ablation, or burn off, occurs in the outer layer as the materials melts, chars, and sublimates. In the mean time, the inner layer pyrolizes and generates gas that pushes outward, providing a cooler boundary layer on the shield. Furthermore, carbon expelled into the shock layer also reduced the temperature at heat shield. (Photo shown below is the Mercury capsule).<br><br><strong>-Haikal-</strong></div>]]></description>
