Introduction

In the 20th century, immigration was at an all time high after the low of the Great Depression. Most of these immigrants flooded to the cities, where demographics were changed because of their presence. They were immigrating for many reasons, including escaping racial, political, and religiously persecution. They found solace in the communities that were formed by the huge groups of immigrants. With the 20th century came the idea of disposable income, and with that, people were able to purchase more things. Immigration in the 1900s influenced the consumer economy across the nation, and ultimately helped drive business.

Whitewashing

Whitewashing is the practice of casting white actors as non-white roles in movies. This was done in part for the audience because it was considered funny at the time, but it was also to appeal to the audience of immigrants. It may seem odd that this racism was accepted by the minorities, but they enjoyed seeing any representation in films. An example of whitewashing was Mr. Yunioshi in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's.

As you can see, Mr. Yunioshi was portrayed as an "irascible bucktoothed nerd." (The Boston Globe). This character would have been offensive even if it were played by an Asian man, but casting Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi made it much worse. Despite this, racially insensitive humor was acceptable when this movie was released and it wasn't criticized until years after its release.

Juan Marichall

Juan Marichall was a baseball player from the Dominican republic who entered the major leagues in 1960. This picture shows his unique pitch where his leg lifted up over his head in order to conceal the type of pitch until it was thrown. Juan Marichall is an example of an immigrant who made a name for himself in the entertainment industry and shifted the market. Because of his success, more immigrants and Dominican Republicans visited baseball games because they had representation.

This poem was carved into the walls of a prison by a Chinese immigrant waiting for entry into the US. This shows the hardships that immigrants faced, and how little they knew when they came to America. Many of them thought the streets were paved with gold and that everything was perfect. However, because of their race, their entry was stopped or slowed down. This source is more difficult to tie into the theme of markets, but I felt it was so powerful that I had to include it. Many immigrants were detained, and this left out many who would have contributed to and purchased from the American economy.

David Reed on Johnson-Reed Act

"The racial composition of America at the present time this is made permanent. The composition of our population will not change in future decades in the same way in which it changed between 1885 and the outbreak of the World War. It is true that 75 per cent of our immigration will hereafter come from Northwester Europe; but it is fair that it should do so, because 75 per cent of us who are now here owe our origin to immigrants from these same countries."

This quote from his speech is sickening to read. He essentially says that the racial makeup of America will stay the same because of these quotas. The Johnson-Reed act (what he is talking about) was released in 1924, and it essentially stopped all Asian immigration, and slowed all non-white immigration. Rejecting immigrants from America had an impact on the economy because it bread racism in communities because there was less diversity, it lead citizens of other countries to boycott American products, and the people who would have immigrated and helped the economy were left barred from the US.
