The Residential school era was an incredibly terrible time for aboriginals, young aboriginal/native children were taken from their families at a young age and forced to give up their religion and traditions. In the late 1800’s the canadian government believed it was responsible for caring for aboriginal people in Canada. They thought the best way for them to get opportunities and jobs was to have them a typical catholic english speaking canadian. The canadian government tortured these children attempting to make them like the “typical” canadian in those days. The goal was to get the children to forget their native ways and pass the traditions they learned, on to their children to keep giving aboriginals opportunities having them know canadian customs and the english language. We realize today how awful the canadian government treated the people that founded our land. This happening really affected our relationship with the aboriginals for we took away their children and stripped them of their native ways. Today, the canadian government still has a weak relationship with the native canadians, we are attempting to improve our relationship with them by giving them some advantages in society. Although, aboriginals are Still faced with racism, hate and stereotyping. The canadian government has apologized for the way they were treated recently, but an apology can never quite make up for what they did. Many aboriginal children were killed or passed away attempting to escape the residential schools. This will always affect the relationship aboriginals and the canadian government have and no matter what the canadian government does to try and fix it they will never be able to un do what they did in the 18-1900’s. The government has giving aboriginals benefits, for example: aboriginals do no have to pay taxes like the rest of society and they do not have to pay for certain pieces of land (reserves). Just recently aboriginals were given equal rights to everyone else that is a Canadian citizen. It just makes me wonder how we could go so long still treating these human beings like they were lesser than everyone else, strictly based on their race and religion. The Canadian government should have taken action way earlier on this issue, waiting as long as they did definitely had an effect on the relationship between the two. In conclusion the Canadian government defiantly should've handled the aboriginal situation better, they showed them no respect and took away their dignity for their religion. The Canadian government could've and should've handled this in a totally different manner and the relationship between the aboriginals and Canadian government could've been improved drastically.
