What percentage of workers lack those digital skills?

According to a study by the National Skills Coalition, over 90% of jobs require digital skills, and 1/3 of workers lack those skills. These statistics are astounding. However, adult education programs can help bridge this gap.

Also, shout out to VAACE - Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education and many others for endorsing this initiative. Adult Education Day brought together educators, learners, partners, and policymakers to celebrate the impact of adult education across Indiana. Attendees were honored to hear from Governor Braun, Representative Davis, Representative Pack, Senator Bray, and Senator Taylor, whose leadership and voices helped highlight the vital role adult education plays in strengthening Indiana’s communities and workforce.

The heart of the day belonged to the Adult Education Day essay winners, who courageously shared their stories of perseverance, growth, and possibility. Their voices, alongside the business and workforce partners who support adult learners every step of the way, illustrated what is possible when education, workforce, and community align around a shared purpose.

Speaking at this particular meeting meant so much more to me than most—my dad was once a very active Rotarian, so being part of this event felt like honoring a piece of his legacy.

When workforce systems are intentionally aligned to employer demand and supported by navigation and wraparound services, individuals can find good jobs to support their households, and businesses can depend on a steady, skilled talent pipeline.

For this reason, Capital Workforce Partners is working with state partners in Connecticut to sustain proven workforce programs at risk of closing when federal funding expires in July.

In their joint op-ed, state leaders must meet their responsibility in protecting workers and families by directing state funds to fill these funding gaps. If not, “training cohorts will shrink, wait times will grow, employers will lose coordinated support, and residents facing the greatest barriers will lose viable pathways back to work.”

I had a great time yesterday at CCAE's Legislative Advocacy day at the State Capitol. Some of my former students spoke with representatives, others wrote letters, and we were able to highlight the real life connections between their experiences and how our legislative asks would help us increase student growth opportunities in our programs. Adult Ed does so much with so little, supporting adults so their families can thrive. Seeing the looks on the faces of those we spoke with, there is no doubt we made an impact.

Margo Hudson - Community Literacy Champion

Margo Hudson is a changemaker in the literacy space in Cleveland with an impressive bio. You might recognize her from the City's Cleveland READS campaign in 2023 and her work in the community. She's been honored with multiple awards and graduated at age 52 from Seeds of Literacy. Margo is a passionate literacy champion, tutor, ambassador, and motivational speaker with a sunny personality.

Margo stopped in last week to pick up books she ordered to fill shelves at local laundromats — her latest endeavor to support reading in Cleveland. She said, "the attendants at the laundromats were very open to having books available." She currently supplies free books to six locations and replenishes the books every other month, and we're thrilled she uses our books to support her volunteer outreach efforts. The books are making an impact. She told us, "Recently I was refilling books, and a woman popped in from the bus stop to grab a book to read on her commute."

Margo is also out in the community distributing our books and GED materials at various community events. Recently she set up a table at a produce giveaway on Storer Ave. in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood and gave away books to attendees as well as other vendors who were excited to see our books, particularly books in Spanish.

What a day at the Capitol!

CareerTech Education Day at the Capitol brought together students, educators and leaders from across Oklahoma to showcase the impact of workforce education in action.

We were proud to have representation from all five of Oklahoma CareerTech’s delivery arms, along with students from each of our seven co-curricular student organizations. Throughout the day, students shared hands-on demonstrations and projects highlighting the real-world skills they’re building every day.

A special thank you to the hospitality students from Meridian Technology Center and Canadian Valley Technology Center for keeping everyone fueled with coffee and pastries while connecting with legislators and guests.

We were also honored to recognize a representative from each student organization on the House floor and to capture a special moment with Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell.

CTE Day at the Capitol is a powerful reminder of the role CareerTech plays as Oklahoma’s Workforce Leader that continues to prepare students of all ages for success.

Washington, DC's Adult Learner Transit Subsidy currently provides students with a $70 monthly Metro and bus credit. However, with rising transportation costs, this subsidy was no longer enough and had become a barrier for many adult learners trying to attend school consistently.

I had the privilege of supporting students as they shared their stories and testified about the impact of transportation costs on their education. Their voices were heard.

I'm happy to report that Charles Allen has included an increase to this subsidy in the city's Fiscal Year 2027 budget, raising the monthly benefit from $70 to $100 beginning October 1, 2026.

This investment will help remove barriers to education, improve access to opportunities, and support adult learners on their path to achieving their goals.

A win for adult learners and a reminder of the power of advocacy and community voices.

In 2025, enrollment in Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs grew nearly 50% to 787 students, who earned 487 industry-recognized certificates—a 44% increase over the previous year. By investing in adult learners, New Mexico is creating opportunities for residents to gain valuable skills and build successful careers right here at home.
