1)      “It was the thumbprints of human imperfection that used to move him, the flaws in the design: the lopsided smile, the wart next to the naval, the mole, the bruise” pg. 100– talking about the sense of humanity snowman/jimmy is lacking within and what he is craving (not a perfect craker woman) craves imperfection and humanity (Craker’s) – represent dehumanization of the tangible (the lack of meaning behind the words, flawless physical appearance, all very similar, perfect smile, teeth, skin, no imperfections, bulges, lopsided, no fat around their waists, no dimples, green eyes – created all to fit crake’s aesthetic.

 

2)     “Hang on to the words” pg. 68– Snowman (word person, intangible, humanities) hang onto what he has left of human connection and meaning of life, connecting to the Craker’s and how they don’t associate meaning to words, snowman wants to hang onto the last few things that depreciate him from the Craker’s and hang onto things and understanding that he possesses – what makes him still humane

 

3)      “No more prostitution, no sexual abuse of children, no haggling over the price, no pimps, no sex slaves. No more rape” pg. 165 - Crakes mindset behind creating the Craker’s (absence of emotion/connection behind sexual acts in his mind will then result in an absence of crime to do with sexual acts)

 

2)     Mental: how words have lost meaning: in the novel a huge thing was that crakers do not understand the meaning behind words, a word is a word to them but their brains are not programmed to give them any context or relate these words to anything tangible (basically the loss of the connection between tangible (real life things and meaning) and intangible (words and language) – this is the main reason why crakers are unable to create meaningful connections and relationships – this relates to our world today when it comes to the fact that language is losing its meaning, for example the word “like” is used more often as a filler world for people instead of actually using in correct context as a way to compare two things are “alike” or to explain something you enjoy

3)     Taken away the intangible: the lack of emotion, feeling in connection in the story, as crake creates his Crakers with the absence of the ability to make REAL and genuine human connections relates to our world today and how social media has distanced humanity (opposite of what social media was meant to do) Crake created his Crakers without this ability to connect to solve others problems such as rape, prostitution, sexual abuse and sex slaves. But instead of doing good negatives came out of this as the Crakers were, as a result, completely dehumanized. Social media is the same where initially it was seen and thought to bring a community and the world closer but instead it has obviously distanced people and created many negatives related to real human connection today. It has just made people are less and less able to communicate in real life relationships with the excessive amount of time spent on social media

*Crake reduces love to hormones and pheromones 

-        Jimmy trying to “hang onto the words” as he is all about humanity, art, and the intangible makes a comment to crake “What about art?”

-        Crake has taken “love”, pleasure, and connection out of sex and relationships and reduced it to something scientific – making humans and sex for the purpose of mating (but we can’t reduce love to hormones and pheromones)

-        humans (Craker’s) are fancy monkeys in the novel they are like a science experiment

-        Crake doesn’t see the value in love and real genuine human connection, feeling, and emotion

-        He has taken out all the intangible of what was once so complex (love) and reduces it to nothing more than just a science for reproduction with complete absence of meaning

-        Oryx and money value is another example (value in body parts)
