         <description><![CDATA[<p>Bartolome De Las Casas a Spanish missionary who was granted an encomienda in 1513.  He decided that the system was wrong because it enslaved natives so he gave up his land. He went to Spain to ask the King and Queen to reform the system, wrote “The Devastation of the Indies” and the encomienda system was abolished in 1542.</p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Encomienda system was abolished. Spanish monarchy appointed viceroys → governors of the American colonies</p><p>Viceroys chosen from Spanish noble families. The system collected taxes, nominated colonial officials, enforced laws, oversaw native conversion to Christianity, and granted encomiendas. Encomiendas: large pieces of land granted to Spanish colonists on which Native Americans were expected to serve the colonists through labor/providing gold. In return, Spanish landowners must protect/care for Native Americans on their land. </p><p><br></p><p><br></p>]]></description>

Portuguese sailors on their way to China were blown off course in 1542. At first, they were welcomed but Portugal sent traders to sell European weapons &amp; Christian missionaries which Japan was against because the Europeans wanted more. </strong></p><p><br></p>]]></description>
