James Dean is a self-taught artist born in Fort Payne, Alabama. He earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and worked for Georgia Power before he was called to work on his art full time. He started drawing and painting his cat, Pete, which became a staple in his artwork. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now over 100 Pete the Cat books, and James is grateful that he can make a positive impact on children's lives.

In the Four Groovy Buttons, he is riding a skateboard to signify his carefree attitude. In all of these books, the text enhances the illustrations. It moves with the pictures to break up ideas and tell a story. The text also matches different colors throughout the story.

Growing up, I loved reading Pete the Cat books. We even named our cat after them! Learning about James Dean and how he created Pete from his cat, showed me how much these books mean to Dean. These books show a common theme of self-expression and the ability to "go with the flow". Both of these things are important for children to learn because things might not always go your way, but you learn to adapt to them and find ways to express yourself nonetheless.
