World War 1 began in 1914 and ended in 1918. 4 years. Yikes. Back then it was called The Great War, because World War 2 hadn't happened yet.

The alliance was one of the 4 main causes of World War 1. There were 2 different alliances.
One was the central power which was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungry, Italy and Turkey.
The second alliance was made up of Russia, France, Great-Britain and the united states.

The alliance system during WW1 was when countries were joined together to make their army stronger. This was to make sure that if they were attacked there were people to back them up.

One of the main reason why WW1 started was because Germany and Austria-Hungry joined forces. If that never happened, then WW1 may have never started. That was the beginning of alliances.
