The writer argues that people have a difficult time paying off their student loans for various reasons, so some Americans who are close to retirement are still paying on student loans. A 57 year old woman is used as an example of someone who has had difficulties such as divorce and illness,, which make it impossible for her to pay her monthly loan payments. The writer provides three reasons for this problem. The accompanying cartoon highlights one of those: some older people have trouble paying off their own student loans because they have incurred new debt by financing their children's education with another loan.

The writer takes a radical stance and argues that people should refuse to pay their student loan debt. She calls the system "an aggressive undermining of human rights." She points out that the US government uses private loan collectors who use intimidation and lies to get people to pay. She believes that education should be a human right and the US has the means to provide education to all citizens. With rising tuition costs and a glut of people with college degrees, graduates have trouble finding jobs that pay enough to cover their student debt. She concludes with an even more radical view: she urges everyone to stop paying off all debts, even for mortgages and medical expenses so that those in power will get the message and change the system.
