Secondary trauma is sometimes known as compassion fatigue. They need to believe they matter and that they're important to all of us. By building positive relationships with our students (and not just those in our classrooms, but all students) we're creating a climate that welcomes struggles and creates successes one student at a time. 

We also need to remind our colleagues that even though we may differ on our opinions and/or instructional approaches - we also love you and there's nothing you can do about it. Validate their feelings. They come to school with so much baggage. They need someone they can trust, rely on and build a relationship with.
