Prewriting is the beginning stage of the writing process. During the stage a writer will choose a topic, gather and organize ideas, consider audience, identify the purpose of th writing, and decide on the appropriate genre. As a student, the prewriting stage granted me the chance to channel all of my creative ideas and thoughts into a brainstorming organizer. I was able to organize my thoughts before writing and chose the voice/tone of my writing. I've noticed that my students spend less time in the prewriting stage sometimes making it difficult to complete the writing. I emphasize how important it is to lay a foundation for your writing and build on it to make it even better!

Drafting

Drafting is the second step in the writing process. A writer will create a rough draft of their writing while making sure to create leads or "attention-grabbers" that will hook the readers' attention and emphasizing content rather than conventions. As a writer I struggled with creating attention grabbers. The worst part of writing for me was to catch the readers attention. It wasn't until my undergraduate years that I truly learned strategies on catching my audience attention with a hook. My students are polar opposite of me at their age! They are actually pretty good creating leads.

Revision

After writing a rough draft , as a writer feedback is critical to the success of perfecting your craft of writing. During the Revision stage , a writer will share their draft with a revision group, actively participate in discussions about classmates' drafts, make changes to reflect the constructive feedback that has been given from a peer or teacher. These changes should be able to reflect a difference and should not only be minor edits. Learning to receive feedback with an open mind can be a challenge. Personally, I believe feedback is given to make you better. No matter if it's negative of positive you can learn from both types. As a writer I benefited from rough drafts being torn apart with my teacher's red pen. I knew that these changes would only make me a better writer. I intend to provide the same experience to my students. Sometimes the red pen can have negative connotation. I want my students to look at the red pen markings of feedback as a chance to be more creative!

Editing

Editing can be seen as the polishing stage. During this time a writer is producing a final product of their writing. This is the time to correct grammar and punctation such capitalization, adding periods, commas, apostrophes, etc. I never struggled as a writer to edit my work. It was more of relief once I was at the editing stage because this last time I would have to work on my writing before publishing or presenting my work. My students struggle with editing but not as much as revision. We are still working on making sure we are creating complete sentences, using periods, capitalizing the beginning of a sentence. However , I have seen a major improvement sine the beginning of the year.

Publishing is the final stage for the writing process. This is the step where the writing is introduced to the audience. Depending on the publishing type, an author page will be included to give background on the writer as well as a photo. Lastly, the writing will then be given a cover. Publishing was always a nervous time for me, because turning a writing in and having someone read it meant I would get feedback from my hard work. I will say for my student publishing is fun for them! They love to share their hardworking with their peers and enjoy dialogue about their work as well. IT motivates them to continue writing and it also provides a chance for my students to give positive comments to their peers.
