Theme in the Text:

In Bradbury's, Fahrenheit 451, we often see the recurrence of the theme "Religion". An example of this would be Montag's attempt of reading the Bible on the subway. However, the information continues to slip through his mind as he is unable to comprehend what he is reading. Because he hasn't been put into a society that has experienced religion, Montag faces difficulty in understanding the Bible's text. We also see this theme when Montag hands Faber the Bible. Recognizing the book, Faber is astonished and amazed at it has suddenly come back to his possession. This shows how the element of religion can provide individuals a sense of comfort and hope.

This society has beaten down and ultimately destroyed the idea of religion, but in their doing so, they have replaced it with enormous, wall-to-wall television screens. Citizens watch these programs on a daily basis - almost religiously.

Before the time of Fahrenheit 451, people practiced all sorts of religions; they could recite passages from whatever religious texts they read from. When you fast forward to the time of Montag, you notice that people directly recite the advertisements forced into their brains via both radio and the television screens whether they like it or not.
