Jeong Dongmin, considered a master in his craft, had been requested to work at the forges near the border of Joseon and Manchuria to strengthen the border in case the Qing, mighty as they were, had come back for vengeance after their recent defeat. Eager to leave his dysfunctional family, rotting business, and the filthy streets of Hanseong with few too many diamonds in the rough to warrant his stay, Dongmin had taken the invitation and left to the border.

He did not know when he would return, or if he even would, as it was a dangerous job only fitting for the strongest of men and smiths. He would be gone for maybe a few months, or even years, possibly to never return. While he promised to send letters to his family, the only promise he intended on keeping was sending them to his eldest sister.

Dongmin left Hanseong without looking back.

Jeong Dongmin had been sent the Joseon and Manchuria border in April of 1869 to help with weapon production and refinery to help strengthen the border in case of another attack after the Qing defeat of December 1868. While he had left on his own accord, he knew that the possibility of him ever coming back was unlikely.

But, Dongmin knew he had nothing to lose. He was willing to find something more from his life, no matter how short that life would be.

Yet, with the borders of Joseon finally softening after the internal war and famine, the extra help hired at the border were no longer needed. Dongmin took the trek back on October 14th.

In a way, Dongmin had hoped he would never see the streets of Hanseong ever again, never see his family home until his lifeless body had been brought back for a funeral. He hoped that things would be different since he was gone. The family house had suffered a little due to the riots, and his family were just getting back on their feet, but in a way, things were much the same. The diffence being the contempt for Dongmin for leaving in the first place.

At least Dongmin was used to people hating him.

The Jang family would come to the Jeong blacksmith often for their ornamental weapons and functional ones, due to their military status. Dongmin, who was a shy boy, would come out of his shell and play with Ilseong whenever he would be around. Eventually, Ilseong would often come visit Dongmin even without his parents by his side.

And so, when Dongmin had been kicked out of his by his father when he was 15, the only place he could go was to Ilseong. He offered his life as Ilseong's bodyguard in exchange for housing him. The Jang family took him in for a few years. At this time, Dongmin had started to develop a crush on Ilseong, and had made it his duty to be by Ilseong's side where he could. However, such things do not go unnoticed.

Eventually, Dongmin had been begged to come back home by his mother and father, and had been formally asked to leave and never speak to Ilseong again from Duchess Jang. With no other choice, and with the words of Ilseong, Dongmin left. He hadn't spoken to Ilseong since.

Which would be Dongmin's lifelong regret.

Upon returning to his family home after being kicked out, Dongmin's family started to look for marriage prospects for him. That is when they turned to the Yang family, who had a daughter close to Dongmin's age. Her name was Minkyung, and though she was beautiful, Dongmin had no desire to get closer to her.

After all, this marriage was an obligation. The only reason his parents begged to have him back in their house. His resentment towards his parents for dragging him out of the Jang household had been wrongly placed on Minkyung, who he treated as if she didn't exist. Not that Minkyung was much better, who hated the idea of marrying someone lower class in spite of the Jeong family's money.

So it was only a matter of time before Minkyung would cheat on Dongmin, though they were not married and had no reason to be faithful aside from the eyes of what people expected to see marriage as... And Dongmin, angry at the world for how they treated him, decided to pay her back.

Dongmin would not let her get out of this unscathed. He had told his family the truth of what he saw, and let the rumours spread of her bad behaviour, catching her in his lies and truths. Safe to say, the betrothal ended there.

Though their paths don't cross often, the two always find themselves parallel to each other, sneering at one another.

Despite his disaster betrothal to Yang Minkyung, Dongmin had somehow manage to keep up a friendship with her younger sister, Seoyul. Perhaps it was their mutual dislike for Minkyung, or the fact that both of them wanted to use each other as an escape from their reality. Dongmin never speaks to Minkyung, yet he always finds himself in the presence of Seoyul whenever she is in need of an older brother figure and Dongmin is not doing much else. Dongmin is not lacking in the slightest when it comes to younger sisters, so Seoyul fits perfectly into his life. They kept in contact until Dongmin left for the Joseon and Manchuria border.
