In 1921, Germany had to pay huge reparations to the Allied countries, but it could not afford to do so. To solve this, the government printed more money, which caused hyperinflation. The currency became worthless, so the government came up with a new temporary solution to fix the problem and stabilize the economy.

Germany’s leaders were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which the people of Germany saw as a humiliation. The Weimar Government became unpopular, and both left- and right-wing groups tried to overthrow it. In 1920, Wolfgang Kapp led a failed coup called the Kapp Putsch. In 1923, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party also tried to seize power in Munich but failed. Hitler was arrested and wrote Mein Kampf in prison. Although the revolt failed, it made him well known and helped his later rise to power.

Germany paid the first reparation in 1921 but said it could not pay in 1922. France did not believe this and took over the Ruhr, Germany’s main industrial area, in 1923. German workers got angry and France unemployed 100,000 Germans and killed over 130 people. The government printed more money to help, which caused hyperinflation. Money became worthless, and people used goods instead of cash. In late 1923, Gustav Stresemann created a new currency called the Rentenmark, and restarted payments, which stabilized Germany’s economy.

Germany had paid a faction of the reparation in 1921 because, they could not pay it in full right away as this would put economic pressure. However, in 1922 Germany could not pay the rest of the reparation. France saw this as if Germany was trying to dodge the reparation so they sent troops (with Belgium) to Ruhr which was Germany's main industrial area. So, Germany could not sit by and sent passive resistance. Which angered France ,and France went on to expel 100000 Germans from the region and killed 130 people in the process. Facing this Germany wanted to help the people that got expelled by giving money. However, to give money while their main industrial area was occupied, they started printing money to support their economy. This action lead to the hyperinflation making money(Mark) worthless rising unemployment, poverty and homelessness. In 1923 Gustav Stresemann became Chancellor and he decided, to end the passive resistance that was happening in the Ruhr. In late 1923 he established the Rentenmark, which was created to stabilize the economy and, printing was strictly limited. Germany resumed to pay the reparation in October 1923. Thus Germany's economy has been stabilized
