The Narrator, arrives at the door steps of the, dreary eerie house of Usher. He was greeted by a servant, who let him in. While the Narrator was walking through the dark house, and reached the room of Roderick Usher. We learn that the room of Rodrick is dark, long and gloomy, with trellised panes, that served to render the distance of more prominent objects. There was an abundance of comfortless, antique furniture. There was an atmosphere of sorrow, and an air of stern, deep, incurable gloom that covered the entire room like a drape. Once entering the room, Rodrick arose from his chair and greeted his dear old friend vivacious warmth. The Narrator, “gazed upon him with a feeling half pity, and half awe.” (p.324). We learn of Rodericks appearance, a corpse like appearance, with large luminous eyes beyond all, will curved man, with a delicate Hebrew modeled nose, finely moulded chin, hair with web like softness and tenuity. His appearance is one that can’t be forgotten.

" 'I shall perish' ... 'I must perish in this deplorable folly...I have, indeed, no abhorrence of danger, except in its absolute effect - in terror...I feel that the period will sooner or later arrive when I must abandon life and reason together, in some struggle with the grim phantasm, FEAR.' "
- Rodrick Usher

Here Rodrick foreshadows his demise by telling his friend that he must die for his mistake and that he doesn't fear death, but is terrified of fear itself that will come with death. He soon will die in a ghastly manor.

Values feelings over intuition:

"It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit, of his earnest desire to see me, and of the solace he expected me to afford him." (p.325)

This connects to the theme because he was talking about how Usher was feeling like he needed to see him. He had some type of intuition, and felt a visit from his old friend was needed.

Has supernatural events in the plot and is often bizarre:

"He suffered much from a morbid acuteness of the senses; the most insipid food was alone endurable; he could wear only garments of certain texture; the odors of all flowers were oppressive; his eyes were tortured by even a faint light; and there were but peculiar sounds, and these from stringed instruments, which did not inspire him with horror." (p.324)

This quote falls under the theme of supernatural and often bizarre because Ushers behaviors are not normal. This is due to his sisters illness, which was making him go mad.

Tries to reproduce the mysterious atmosphere suggested by medieval castles:

" He was enchained by certain superstitious impressions in regard to...his family mansion, had, by dint of long surfference... an effect which the physique of the gray walls and turrets, and of the dim tarn into which... had, at length, brought upon the morale of his existence." (p.325)

This quote best fits with this theme because of the atmosphere it produces, a mysterious feeling from the walls, turrets, and lake. It creates a superstition of medieval castles with the vivid imagery it describes.
