The biggest challenge in making connects is that it is almost impossible to "keep track" of relationships or even be able to know the vibe of every student every day through the computer. When we are on campus, we as teachers, can tell if a student is having a "bad day" within seconds of seeing them and right away we can address it and help the student. Even just noticing and/or offering to help out which is unmeasurably important when building these
relationships. Over the computer that is going to be exponentially harder.
-Cooper

I believe the biggest challenge will be getting to know the students in a meaningful way, especially using an artificial form of communication. Will students get to know us well enough to feel comfortable enough to reach out when it is needed? Will we have the time to adjust curriculum appropriately using that information?

Challenges Building Relationships in DL

I agree with Heather that it will be very difficult building relationships with students who do not participate in the class (synchronously or asynchronously). I also agree that communication with the student and their family will be essential to assisting in bringing them into class and building relationships.

I also appreciate the small class sizes as Tracey pointed out. This will assist in building relationships and better knowing our students.

I see a challenge also with the short time we have with students (6 weeks vs. 18 weeks per semester). Art students can often lack the confidence in their work from the start or periodically through their journey as an artist. I hope to have one-on-one zoom meetings with each student once a week, if not every other week.

With limited face to face interaction one of the biggest challenges to me is not getting the nuances of body language and facial expression. Yes, we will be on zoom but it is going to be difficult to monitor and connect with that large of a group all at once. Also, the banter you would have individually with a student you probably don't want to have in a group setting, in most cases.
