In response to the controversial topic of AI and its relation with art, Cai Guo-Qiang decided to create cAI (pronounced Cai AI). This program, designed by Cai and his team, is meant to learn and adapt to art prompts given to it. The hope is that it will eventually be able to create its own work based on what it has learned from “Cai’s rich oeuvre, extensive writings, archival materials, and documentation.”

This article written by Cai Studio addresses Guo-Qiang’s thoughts and intentions with this project, as well as the exploration of this new technology. Cai Guo-Qiang also speaks of his view of the controversial topic at hand. He explains how not all AI art is art, and how discussions will arise regarding its standing within art history and the expansion of AI over time. After everything is addressed, there are the experimental stages Cai and his team have worked through so far displayed at the bottom of the article. While the topic of AI is concerning to most, we are shown the process in which it is created and how Cai finds it a friend, not a foe.

Aligning its argument with Walter Benjamin’s The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical, this article addresses the complexities created in the world of art by AI. Specifically, it addresses the “pivotal juncture in art history, catalyzing significant shifts in creative methodologies, the artist’s role, and the very essence of art [itself].”

Similar to that of Cai Gou-Qiang’s claim on AI generated art (not always being art), the claims of this article suggest that due to AI’s specific aesthetic the “aura” of the art itself changes. The mention of this in the article suggests that not only will the creation and history of art be affected, but our aesthetics will have the chance of shifting to fit that of AI, regardless if it's mechanically or digitally produced. With that being said, this article concludes with the topic of how AI enables more people to participate in the art world and the negative and positive effects of that.

One of the highest rising concerns with AI art is how it interprets work produced by artists. Many AI systems that aren’t capable of learning from an artist's private collection such as cAI, take their image sourcing from the internet, this includes social media. Due to this, it learns to copy and mimic the unique individual styles artists have created for themselves. Not only is that a concern, but specific work of theirs is manipulated by AI to generate something different with a combination of other artists’ work. This is the biggest problem arising within the art community as new technology arises in today's society.

This article addresses the concerns of artists, their work, copyright issues, the authenticity of AI art, and whether it’s a good direction for art itself. While this article does lean more heavily towards the negative aspects of AI-generated art, it still takes into consideration the counter arguments presented at this time.

This video provided by the MOMA discusses a more positive take on AI as a tool for artists. This similarly aligns with Cai Guo-Qiang’s perspective, that AI is a source of exploration. AI as a whole is new to society and because of that it is new to most. This opens a new area of exploration, as we are still trying to understand the advanced technology.

With this perspective, MOMA explains how they have created an AI exhibition themselves. Using outside sources, the technology was able to adapt, creating its own sources to collect characteristics from and generate its own reality. From the pieces shown, there is a very abstract outcome allowing for movement within the work as you navigate through the many possible photos of its reality. Oftentimes, their creation appears as a cell under the microscope. This video explains the training of AI, how it is used to create, its complexity, and provides examples of how it can be successful without interference in society. Comparing its redefinement of art to that of Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades.

During her TED talk, Holly Herndon discusses how she created an AI called Holly+. This AI was trained by Holly, to sing using her voice, through Timbre transfer. It enables her to sing in languages she is unable to speak herself. She calls this method “spawning:” playing off the old method of music known as sampling. Sampling you learn by playing off someone else, spawning allows you to mimic a sound that allows you to expand your musical reach.

After introducing her work, she addresses the complexity of AI used as a tool and how society can use her experiment leading to many possibilities in the future. Her take is that AI is a beneficial tool and can be used to enhance art as we know it.

This information is backed by a live display of a male singer, Pher, using her Holly+ in pairing with his own vocalization. This display of AI is similar to that of Cai Guo-Qiang’s exploration, where it is seen as a tool rather than a negative entity.
